Lilah leaned in, whispering words of wisdom. “This is just the start.
The higher you rise, the more eyes will be on you.'
Phoebe took a deep breath, imagining the weight of the world on her shoulders. "With you by my side, I can face it."
Their conversation wound down as the bandaging reached its final stages. Lilah exited the room, intending to fetch a drink for Phoebe.
But, before she could make it far, a strong hand clasped her wrist.
She spun around, meeting Gerard's intense gaze. A tug on her pant leg drew her eyes downward, where Jerrold looked up at her, concern evident in his young eyes.
Upon seeing them both, a surprised expression danced on Lilah's face.
"What brings you two here?"
"Are you alright?" The typically composed Gerard now scrutinized her, an unfamiliar worry in his eyes. Jerrold, with his big, curious eyes, mirrored Gerard's concern.
Lilah, sensing their confusion, laughed softly. “It's not me; it's a colleague who got hurt. I'm just here with her."
Their tension dissolved instantly. Lilah, unable to resist Jerrold's concerned face, scooped him up, planting a gentle kiss on his round cheek. "Thanks for caring so much."
She glanced up from Jerrold to find Gerard's intense eyes locked onto hers, an unspoken question in them. A blush spread across her cheeks, and she quickly changed the subject. "How did you even find out I was here?"
“I have my ways," Gerard murmured.
Lilah shook her head, admiring his reach and efficiency. “Are you wrapping up your errands here?"
“Actually, I was planning to head home tonight. What about you?"
She smiled warmly. "We had the same idea. But, before we go, we should see if there are any flight tickets left."
"We've got it covered " Gerard responded with a hint of amusement.
"I've got my own jet.”
Lilah blinked in surprise. The realization of his vast wealth, once again, dawned upon her.
Back in the hospital room, Phoebe's eyes widened as she took in the man accompanying Lilah. “Miss Phillips, is he a friend?"
“He's more of a client," Lilah said, choosing her words carefully.
Given Gerard's unique standing, she preferred a certain level of discretion in public spaces; she didn't want any unintended attention on him.
Phoebe nodded in acknowledgment as her eyes darted back to the handsome Gerard, attempting to place his familiar face. Suddenly, he shot her a piercing look. She immediately looked away, a shiver running down her spine.
After settling the hospital fees, they made their way to the airport.
