"Hey!" Gerard's voice burst through the line with excitement.
"Kenneth just called. Jerrold's painting sold for ten million!"
Lilah's eyes sparkled with surprise. “Really? I always knew Jerrold was destined for greatness!"
"Yeah, my parents are thrilled. They want us to celebrate at the hotel tonight. Can you get off work early? I'll come get you."
“Absolutely. Celebrating Jerrold's success comes first. I'll be ready."
"Okay," Gerard replied gently.
After ending the call, a proud smile played on Lilah's lips. Her son had made her so proud.
She hurried to finish her day's work. By six, she called Gerard.
“Alright, I'm ready now."
“On my way, I just wrapped up some important stuff too," Gerard responded as he stood, grabbed his coat, and headed out.
Together, they arrived at the hotel. Gerard found a parking spot, and they walked into the lobby, moving in unison toward the room set aside for their celebration.
At the door, Gerard knocked, and Richard's hearty voice welcomed them from within, "Come in."
Lilah and Gerard had just entered when Jerrold rushed up to hug Lilah's legs. "Mommy!"
"Hey, baby! You were fantastic today. I'm really proud of you!" Lilah said, ruffling his hair and beaming.
Jerrold flashed a smile at her.
Richard then chimed in, “Jerrold really made us all proud today. He's a true gem to the Harris family. I'm ecstatic. Lilah, Gerard, please take a seat. I'll have more to share once everyone's settled."
Lilah guided her son to a spot at the square table, and they sat down. Brenda turned to Lilah and inquired, "Has work been keeping you on your toes lately?"
"It's been manageable," Lilah responded, still smiling.
The more Brenda observed Lilah, the fonder she grew of her. “That's good to hear. Remember, if you ever need assistance with something tough, Gerard is there to help. And when you find some time, do come by more often."
Lilah nodded. "Sure, I'll try to visit with Gerard whenever we get a chance."
"Okay," Brenda murmured, her gaze drifting toward Gerard as she sighed softly, reflecting on the differences between her generation's lifestyle and that of the younger ones.
She seemed hesitant, as if there was more she wanted to say.
Seeing Brenda's lingering gaze, Lilah asked gently, "Is there something you're thinking about?"
Brenda, noticing Lilah's inquisitive glance, hesitated before speaking.
