This bracelet, a past gift from her husband, held antique allure, adorning her for half her life.
She presumed Lilah would feel joy and gratitude.
But she was wrong.
"Thank you, Mrs. Morris. Your kindness is valued. However, my collection of bracelets is abundant. I do not need for another. Please, retain it."
With a faint smile and a sarcastic glint in her eyes, Lilah gazed at Danna.
Mastering the art of reciprocity, she was skilled in tit-for-tat.
“How dare you!" Danna's hand thundered onto the table.
Her fury was unmistakable.
Karol expressed, "Lilah, I don't possess this jade bracelet. Grandma bestowed it upon you, but you Looked down upon it."
"I simply spoke the truth." Lilah maintained, her unwavering smile compounding Karol's embarrassment.
“Lilah, I've arranged a room for you. Allow the maid to escort you to have a look first." Absolon summoned a maid.
Lilah acquiesced gracefully, trailing the maid upstairs.
Upon her departure, Absolon's countenance darkened.
“Mother, Lilah is my biological daughter and your granddaughter. You can't mistreat her at your whim! Moreover, she saved my life. Even if you disavow her lineage, you must acknowledge her kindness for rescuing me," he asserted icily.
Absolon, inherently filial, had never harbored such intense anger toward Danna previously.
Observing his enraged expression, Danna was both startled and incensed.
She sneered and didn't give way. "What do you imply by that? I've already granted her entry. What further demands do you harbor? She is the offspring of that capricious woman. Her paternity remains a mystery. Yet, you alone cherish her like a gem. Are you not apprehensive of erring and thus exposing your folly?"
Then, Karol added, “Dad, Grandma speaks the truth. Lilah is so cunning that she can shame Grandma and me with mere words. She has always been opposed to me. I dare not embrace such a sibling!"
Once, she could feign benevolence in others‘ presence.
But facing Danna, she yearned to divulge every flaw, hoping Danna would expel that audacious woman.
“Listen carefully, I shall utter this but once." Absolon's disappointment was palpable as he addressed them, enunciating each word deliberately. “Lilah is my biological daughter. There exists no doubt in this matter. Extend to her the same respect you afford me. Even if discontent festers within, contain it in your hearts. Don't let me see such things again!"
After his remark, he pivoted and ascended the stairs.
Danna's countenance clouded. With determination, she swept the contents of the table onto the floor.
Lilah, too, caught the sound. Yet, she remained indifferent.
