"My sixtieth birthday is coming up! I'd love for you to join the celebration. Will you be able to?"

Lilah was taken aback. Brenda was turning sixty? She could easily pass for someone decades younger.

After confirming she had no conflicting engagements that weekend, Lilah, remembering Brenda's past kindness, accepted the invitation.

"That's wonderful! Do dress elegantly!" Brenda's text bubbled with excitement.

Lilah promised she would, smiling to herself.

The party location was at the Horizon Hotel, a detail that left Lilah astounded. A birthday bash there would be an opulent affair, revealing Brenda's significant means. Clearly, Lilah needed to select a set of appropriate, formal attire.

That evening, she visited the mall, perusing an array of dresses before choosing a sophisticated gray-pink gown. Emerging from the fitting room, she was met with admiring gasps, her choice evidently a success.

"Wow, miss, you look absolutely breathtaking in that gown! It's as if a goddess has graced our store," the sales assistant gushed, her compliment turning heads throughout the store.

Suddenly, the sound of lively chatter signaled new customers at the entrance.

Maggie, flanked by her friend, sauntered in, only to stop dead in her tracks at the sight of Lilah. Her friend gasped, hand flying to her mouth. "Isn't that Lilah over there?"

Maggie's friend was undeniably captivated by the dress Lilah had chosen; it was exquisite.

The same thought crossed Maggie's mind.

The memory of Lilah outshining her during their previous encounter, thanks to that infuriatingly wealthy older lady, was still fresh. But today, Maggie had the upper hand. This was her territory, where she reigned as a Diamond VIP!

“I want that dress. Let me try it on," Maggie demanded, pointing at Lilah's selection.

Recognizing Maggie's privileged status, the assistant turned apologetically to Lilah. “I'm terribly sorry, but Miss Lewis here holds Diamond VIP membership with us and has priority for any item."

Smug satisfaction painted Maggie's features as she squared her shoulders, eyeing Lilah triumphantly.

Lilah met her gaze with cool indifference. "That's fine." She didn't want to create any trouble for the store staff.

After changing, she handed over the dress without a word. The sales assistant, with a show of utmost respect, presented it to Maggie, who snatched it with a haughty sneer directed at Lilah before disappearing into the fitting room.

Maggie's friend reveled in her victory. "See the gap between you two now, Lilah? You might have talent in jewelry design, but Maggie's in a different social league!"

Disinterested in her taunt, Lilah turned her attention to other dresses in the vicinity.

After a short wait, Maggie emerged, her face glowing with anticipation, eager for adulation. But the reflection in the mirror shattered her expectations. The dress, while undeniably beautiful, lost its charm on her.

Its pink hues clashed with her darker complexion, and the fit on her body was far from the elegance it exuded on Lilah.

Her friend, sensing her growing discontent, scrambled to shower her with compliments. "Maggie, you look amazing! The dress is perfect on you!"

The sales assistant chimed in, albeit less convincingly, "Absolutely, Miss Lewis, you look extraordinarily enchanting!"
