Ruth was shocked. She hadn't used much force just now.
This damn hypocritical bitch!
That evening, Lilah got a call from Absolon, inviting her for a family dinner at home.
She almost instinctively refused, but not wanting to disappoint Absolon, she reluctantly agreed.
At eight o'clock, Lilah returned home. The servants had already laid out the dinner.
“Lilah, come and sit here," Absolon called, gesturing to the sofa. He handed her a cup of coffee.
It was only then that Lilah noticed Karol was also there, looking unwell in a corner of the sofa.
Her leg wound appeared to still be bothering her.
“Feeling any better?" Lilah asked nonchalantly.
Karol appeared flattered and nodded appreciatively. "Much better. But really, it's just my luck to encounter such an unreasonable person today. Lilah, you need to steer clear of Ruth. She's gone completely overboard."
Lilah furrowed her brows, puzzled. Had there been a confrontation?
Just then, Danna descended the spiral staircase, leaning on a servant for support, and said, "It's all Lilah's fault. And to think you even defended her-I think that's foolish of you."
"Mom." Absolon cast an unhappy glance at Danna.
“am I wrong? It's all because of your so-called ‘good daughter’. Ruth felt emboldened to mistreat Karol, echoing what Lilah did to her!"
Danna let out a derisive snort. The more she saw Lilah, the less she liked her.
Lilah realized today was not her day; criticism seemed inevitable.
What terrible Luck!
Yet, she chose not to retaliate. Knowing Danna's temperament all too well, she saw no point in wasting words.
"Grandma, please," Karol interjected, surprising everyone. "You promised me you wouldn't make baseless accusations in front of Lilah."
Karol looked toward Danna with a hint of displeasure and took a deep breath. "I guess I'm just unlucky this time. I thought Ruth wanted to meet out of camaraderie, but it seems I was mistaken..."
As the two seemed to cooperate seamlessly, Lilah began to piece things together.
"Don't make excuses for Lilah. Ruth only asked you out to let off steam. Thankfully, Kaden was with you, or who knows what might have happened," Danna remarked sharply. “Look at her, she doesn't even care about you, yet you treat her like a sister."
"Grandma, that's not true!"
Karol's voice echoed with urgency. "I've told you, it has nothing to do with Lilah!"
