“Gerard, we should go back," Lilah urged. "Brenda must be in a lot of pain. We need to return now."
Gerard clenched his jaw and stared straight ahead.
They were so close to their destination.
“Something doesn't add up, Gerard said coldly. “Calvin, figure out what really happened."
Lilah and Gerard had no choice but to head toward the hospital.
Lilah was especially worried that Brenda's injury might cause her old condition to flare up.
By the time they reached the hospital, the doctor had already treated Brenda. Her shin was wrapped in thick plaster.
When Brenda saw them, she forced a smile.
Holding back her own sadness, Lilah walked over and took Brenda's hand.
“What happened?" Lilah asked gently.
Brenda had always been careful due to her poor health, so this kind of accident was unusual.
“It's all my fault..." Livia, who had been trembling in the corner, stood up. She wiped away her tears and looked ashamed. “If I had held on to Aunt Brenda better, she wouldn't have fallen."
Livia resembled Gerard a bit, but her features were softer.
"Tell me more about what happened."
Lilah wasn't quick to believe Livia when it came to Brenda.
Lilah glanced at the butler and Richard.
Richard gave the butler a nod.
The butler took out his phone and played the surveillance video for Lilah.
The footage showed Brenda slowly making her way downstairs, holding onto the railing. When Livia saw her from the living room on the first floor, she rushed over to assist Brenda down the stairs.
After only a couple of steps, both of them tumbled down together.
The video didn't clearly show who slipped first, but it was obvious that as they fell, Livia positioned herself to shield Brenda. If not for Livia, Brenda might have hit her head on the steps, which could have been much worse.
"This isn't Livia's fault. I was walking too quickly and ended up causing the trouble," Brenda said, waving her hand, signaling Lilah to drop the matter.
Lilah sensed something wasn't right, but Brenda seemed firm in her stance, so she couldn't argue.
"No, Aunt Brenda, it's all my fault. I'm the one to blame.. Livia said, her voice filled with sorrow. Livia walked to the bedside with tears in her eyes and held Brenda's hand. "Can I stay and take care of you for the next few days?"
