In less than half an hour, they arrived at the Morris family home.
To their surprise, the place was bustling with guests, as if a celebration was underway.
When Lilah inquired, she learned that it was the day of Walter and Ashlyn's engagement.
Due to Aunt Chen's severe illness, the Morris family had kept it low-key, inviting only a few important guests for a simple celebration at home.
Before Lilah could react, it was Gerard who first showed his anger.
"How dare the Morris family treat my sister so poorly! They must be out of their minds!" he scoffed, striding towards the Morris family entrance.
The people at the door were so frightened by their arrival that they quickly went to alert the hosts.
Soon, Walter's father, Goodwin, the head of the Morris family, came out to greet them.
"Gerard, why didn't you let us know you were coming? Come, come inside."
After Gerard entered the room, he directly asked, "Uncle Mo, let's get straight to the point. You and I both know the relationship between Walter and Effie. We cannot accept Walter suddenly getting engaged to someone else. If Mr. Mo doesn't provide us with a reasonable explanation, today's engagement ceremony...
"Walter, come with me," Goodwin sighed deeply, leading the group to the backyard.
From a distance, Lilah could see a courtyard surrounded by several burly men, all dressed in hazmat suits, as if something terrifyingly contagious was confined within.
"Please get a protective suit for each of them," Goodwin's voice was particularly heavy.
Once the three had changed into the suits, they could only see each other's faces and eyes through the transparent visors.
Under Goodwin's guidance, they arrived outside a small courtyard. Through the window, Lilah immediately saw the woman lying on the hospital bed.
She was Walter's mother, Norah.
"A few days ago, my wife returned from a vacation at an exotic island and mysteriously developed a high fever the next day.
Despite using conventional treatments, there was no improvement.
We discreetly searched for renowned doctors, but unexpectedly, her limbs began to ulcerate. Just when we were at our wits' end, the Jensen family sent a prescription to suppress the virus, saying Walter needed to get engaged to Ashlyn, or they would cut off the medicine supply, leaving my wife...
At this point, Goodwin could no longer continue.
So that's how it was.
"Didn't you consider that the virus might be a ploy by the Jensen family to force you? Their ultimate goal is to have Walter marry Ashlyn, " Lilah said. Goodwin's face turned grim.
The once full of life and vigor middle-aged man now exuded an indescribable sense of defeat, as if he had suffered an unprecedented blow.
"Mr. Harris, we know Effie well. Our families have always been on good terms, and Walter has repeatedly told me he wants to marry Effie. I never disagreed; his mother even prepared a cherished family heirloom bracelet for Effie.
