As the countdown ebbed to zero, they plunged into the pool.
"Is Evelyn truly that skilled?"
“Wie didn't give her enough credit."
Evelyn surged ahead, a clear leader. The crowd's murmur grew into spirited discussions, and Xavier Jewelers’ staff rallied. “Let's go, Ms. White!"
"Ms. White is spectacular!"
They seized the moment to taunt Aurora Jewelers. "Your boss is average at best."
The male designer, previously tense, breathed easier seeing Evelyn's lead.
He wouldn't be bowing to Lilah!
Confidence in Evelyn's victory swelled.
Evelyn herself was certain of her triumph. The finish line was in sight, victory nearly hers. Yet, out of nowhere, she felt a rush as Lilah zipped by to touch the finish first!
Evelyn was so startled she nearly swallowed water.
A hush fell over the onlookers.
“Had Lilah been holding back?"
Emerging from her shock, Phoebe was ecstatic. "Miss Phillips is incredible!"
Cheers exploded from Aurora Jewelers' team.
"Kudos to Miss Phillips for seizing first place. Please approach the resort to receive your prize!" The referee hoisted Lilah's hand in victory.
Lilah's smile was gracious as she gazed down at Evelyn, who stood drenched, fresh from the pool.
Evelyn's eyes were fixed on Lilah, her nails pressing into her palms so hard she didn't even feel it.
“Ms. White, is it time to honor your promise?" Lilah's voice was gentle, yet it stung Like a slap on Evelyn's cheek.
Everyone had pinned their hopes on Evelyn to overturn Xavier Jewelers‘ misfortune. However, she had faltered against Lilah.
Evelyn inhaled sharply.
With countless eyes upon her, she had no other option but to respond with composure, “It's merely a store. I'll arrange its transfer to you this evening."
"Rufus," she beckoned the male designer who'd made the earlier promise. He approached with reluctance, his expression fraught with turmoil.
Lilah decided not to corner him further. “No need for the bow. A simple apology will suffice."
