Only when she was out of sight did murmurs begin.
"Could Lilah really have caused Adaline's miscarriage?"
"Isn't Adaline her own sister? Does Lilah still hold feelings for Iker?"
The general consensus was one of disdain for Lilah. Despite Gerard's overt affections, she played him false.
Phoebe, visibly agitated, interjected, “Enough! Lilah isn't like that.
The police are merely conducting an inquiry."
In Lilah's absence, Phoebe assumed leadership. Her words held weight, silencing the whispers. The staff resumed work.
At the police station...
“Surveillance indicates you pushed Adaline, leading to her miscarriage. Care to explain?" an officer questioned.
Lilah countered, "The footage shows I made no forceful action.
Adaline's fall was a deliberate act to frame me."
"You're suggesting she fell before you could exert any force? Perhaps you underestimate your own strength," the officer challenged.
"I didn't push her."
“But you implied you didn't use much force, indicating you made a move. Yet, you believe she collapsed before you could really push?"
Lilah, frustration evident, clarified, “Let's be clear. She grasped my hand. I tried to pull away, but before I could act, she was on the floor."
The officer eyed her skeptically. “Your initial statement was vague.
Now this. Attempting to weave a defense, are we?"
“If you continue to twist my words, I'll consider filing an official complaint," Lilah warned.
The officer's expression grew stormy. While many in such situations might become rattled or inadvertently incriminate themselves, Lilah remained composed. She was no ordinary suspect.
The policewoman beside him felt he might be pushing too hard. Giving him a nudge, she signaled for him to change his line of questioning.
When the session concluded, the officer stated, "There are still unresolved concerns. We'll need your continued cooperation here."
"I've not been proven guilty, merely suspected," Lilah retorted icily.
"You don't have the right to detain me."
Before the officer could respond, another officer entered, whispering something in his ear. Although visibly unhappy, he conceded, "You may leave now."
