Noticing the tiredness in Phoebe's eyes, Lilah advised, “Don't overdo it, okay?"
Chuckling, Phoebe replied, “Don't worry. I've got this.”
With a playful smile, she made her exit as the elevator doors opened.
The day after Adaline's arrest, Lilah's phone buzzed relentlessly with messages and calls from family.
She chose not to answer.
She could only imagine the turmoil back home.
Meanwhile, at the Phillips Group, Helga was distraught, desperately seeking a way to help Adaline.
She turned to Matthew. “Isn't there something we can do?"
Matthew's face darkened with disappointment. The revelations about Adaline's actions weighed heavily on him.
How could she harm the family like this? And she claimed to do this for the Phillips Group?
His voice was icy as he replied, “I've done what I can. But Helga, how did we raise her to become this person?" Anger seethed beneath his words.
Helga tried to deflect the blame. "Lilah's brilliance overshadowed Adaline. If she hadn't outshone her younger sister at every turn, Adaline might not have acted out!"
Matthew's frustration was palpable. Recent events, including Adaline's scandal, had severely impacted their business. To make matters worse, a potentially Lucrative project was dropped by a client after hearing about Adaline's actions. "So now it's Lilah's fault for being competent? Adaline's misdeeds are a product of your coddling! Maybe some time away will give her a much-needed reality check."
Helga felt her heart sink. Matthew seemed so indifferent to Adaline's plight. Did he even care? To her, his detachment felt almost cruel.
"Matthew, how can you be so heartless? I married into this family, and raised your two girls, even without us having a child of our own.
I've never voiced my struggles, always loving them as if they were my own. What more do you expect from me?" With that, she broke down.
Matthew took in the sight of his wife, still gracefully aging with beauty. His anger softened, replaced with a tinge of remorse.
He embraced her, whispering, “Helga, please don't cry. It's not that I won't help Adaline. It's that my hands are tied. You know the business isn't thriving, and Gerard's backing Lilah. Opposing him isn't an option for us now."
Helga's despair deepened, but she grasped at a possible solution.
“Then speak to Lilah. She's your daughter. She won't disregard what you have to say."
Matthew's eyes flickered with hesitation. "I'll attempt to reach out."
Despite his efforts, Matthew struggled to get in touch with Lilah. He even lingered at the company's entrance but she eluded him.
Later that day, Lilah was dining with Gerard when her phone buzzed.
"You've got an incoming call," Gerard reminded.
