“Indeed,” Brenda responded, grinning warmly and looping her arm through Lilah's. “Let's explore the jewelry stores together."
Lilah had initially believed someone of Brenda's stature might be aloof. But Brenda's warmth and genuine kindness were surprising and refreshing. Several times, Brenda insisted on gifting Lilah a piece of jewelry.
"You've been eyeing this piece for a while. If it's to your liking, let me get it for you," Brenda offered generously.
"I was merely admiring its beauty. You really don't need to," Lilah protested.
“Nonsense. If it caught your eye, then consider it yours," Brenda declared, handing her bank card to the cashier. Moments later, one of her bodyguards stepped forward, collected the purchase, and resumed his discreet post nearby.
Lilah looked on, both touched and amazed by Brenda's generosity.
Brenda smiled warmly. “I've purchased the pieces you seemed fond of.
After all, you're designing for me. Take them home and study them; they might spark some creativity."
Wasn't this a bit much?
"Brenda, I have a considerable collection at home. This is overly generous. I'd kindly ask you to refrain from buying more." Lilah expressed her gratitude and slight discomfort.
"Very well, I respect your wishes," Brenda replied with a chuckle.
Lilah felt relieved. Her attention was soon captured by a particularly stunning piece on display.
"May I see that one?" she inquired to the sales assistant.
Before the assistant could answer, a familiar voice echoed. "Lilah?"
Lilah spun around, not expecting to see Iker's mother, Regina Lewis, at the store, accompanied by her daughter Maggie Lewis. Both were clad in ornate jewelry, making them stand out distinctly.
Regina, during Lilah's time with Iker, often carried a condescending tone, and Maggie, unfortunately, had taken after her mother's vain demeanor. Previously, Lilah had often acquiesced to their demands, presenting them with lavish gifts to keep the peace. But times had changed. She simply acknowledged with a reserved “Mrs. Lewis.”
Regina, noting Lilah's newfound assertiveness, narrowed her eyes. She was accustomed to Lilah's former deference.
"It's been a while, and yet, you seem no different," Regina remarked, a smirk curling her lips. Her gaze shifted to Brenda, assessing Lilah's companion's attire and lack of flashy jewelry. “Out shopping with an elderly companion? Is she your client? Your associations have certainly changed. It's a blessing my son never made you his bride."
Maggie mirrored her mother's scornful expression.
Lilah's eyes hardened. Her ties with them had been severed, yet Regina seemed unable to resist a chance to belittle her.
"In that case, I should be grateful to your son for sparing me from a lifetime with your family," Lilah fired back.
“No need for the bravado. You once yearned to be part of our family.
Now that Iker has chosen your sister, I imagine it's a bitter pill for you to swallow," Regina said with a sneer.
Brenda, sensing the tension, jumped to Lilah's defense. "Considering the utter lack of manners displayed by your son, why do you hold your head so high? The arrogance is astounding!"
