Initially, Brenda wasn't aware of Regina's identity, but piecing together their exchange, she was appalled. This woman dared to deride her cherished future daughter-in-law?
Regina's eyes narrowed. “And who might you be?"
“It matters not to you. Perhaps you should focus on teaching your son some basic decorum instead!" Brenda snapped.
“Brenda,” Lilah interjected softly.
Regina smirked, mistaking Lilah's intervention as a sign of her lingering affection for Iker. She assumed Lilah was still infatuated and would leap to his defense.
However, Lilah's words caught her off guard. “Her son is not only devoid of refinement, but he's also exceptionally ordinary despite his delusions of grandeur. Anyone who fell for such a facade must surely have been deluded. I'm just thankful my vision has since been corrected."
Brenda, suppressing a chuckle, added, “Indeed, clarity can be a blessing."
Regina, fuming at their audacity, attempted a final jab. "Keep up your little act, Lilah. You're just envious. Without my family's name behind you, you're insignificant. And I'll take that necklace!"
She reached for the piece Lilah had earlier admired.
The sales assistant nodded deferentially and said, "Certainly, ma'am."
"Such pettiness!" Brenda remarked with a dismissive shake of her head.
Regina, unable to contain herself, sneered. "Clearly, the two of you are just bitter. I doubt either of you could afford this necklace."
Maggie sneered at Lilah. “You really fit in with someone like her, too frugal to make a single purchase. Quite a downgrade, I'd say.
Remember those bracelets I gave you? Do you miss those days now?"
Maggie's gifts to Lilah had been nothing but hand-me-downs she no longer wanted. The audacity to bring it up now took Lilah by surprise.
"The items you ‘gifted’ were hardly treasures. They were mere cast-offs. Why would I cherish something even you deemed unworthy?" Lilah replied coolly.
Fury flashed in Maggie's eyes. "Continue playing your part, Lilah.
How much can you possibly gain from hanging around an elderly woman?"
Before Lilah could counter, Brenda swiftly presented a card to the sales assistant. "I'll purchase the necklace. And, in the future, I suggest you reconsider who you choose to do business with."
The sales assistant's demeanor changed instantly upon recognizing the card. It was exclusive to the store's primary investors. She had almost snubbed a major stakeholder!
"Of course, ma'am," she said hurriedly, meticulously wrapping the necklace and handing it over to Brenda. As Brenda signaled, a bodyguard approached, laden with numerous luxurious shopping bags.
“Lilah, dear, see anything else you fancy? Consider it yours," Brenda offered generously.
Lilah demurred, "I truly don't need anything more."
“Nonsense. I'll ensure you're well-equipped so you won't be belittled by the likes of them again," Brenda declared, waving her hand in disdain.
