Gerard, sensing Jerrold's emotional turmoil, took the phone from him and gently said, "He's a bit upset."
Lilah's voice carried a hint of surprise, followed by guilt. "I apologize. I should've informed both of you sooner. I just didn't think I'd find a place so quickly."
"It's alright," Gerard responded, his tone soft.
An awkward pause lingered between them.
After a few reassuring words to Jerrold, Lilah ended the call.
Gerard gazed at Jerrold, noting the tear tracks on his cheeks, and suggested, “Perhaps it's time for us to leave the hotel and return home too."
Jerrold vehemently shook his head. He had cherished the moments shared with Lilah in that place.
But in the end, Gerard made the decision for him, guiding him away.
Meanwhile, Lilah, now comfortably settled in her airy apartment, was pampering herself with a face mask when a sudden ruckus from the neighboring unit caught her attention.
Curious, she wondered if her neighbor had arrived.
The noise from the opposite apartment persisted, punctuated by the unmistakable sound of objects being shattered and toppled.
Were they rearranging or outright destroying the place?
Lilah assumed residents of such a posh building would maintain some decorum, Growing increasingly irked, Lilah decided to address the issue.
Approaching the neighboring unit, she knocked softly.
When the door swung open, it unveiled a strikingly familiar visage.
"Hello," Lilah began, but her greeting halted mid-sentence upon recognizing the man before her.
"Lilah?"
Gerard's voice held a touch of astonishment, and Lilah shared his sentiment of surprise. Almost immediately, a young boy darted from behind him, latching onto Lilah's leg. His big, glistening eyes looked up at her, evoking profound sympathy.
“Darling, what happened?" Overwhelmed by the child's evident distress, Lilah crouched down to his level.
Jerrold shot a reproachful glance at Gerard. The latter's composed facade now betrayed a glimmer of vexation. "He realized you had left and wanted to find you. I tried to dissuade him, and well... he didn't take it well."
So this upheaval was because of her departure? Lilah grappled with a pang of guilt for inadvertently stirring this commotion. Gently caressing Jerrold's hair, she assured, “Looks like fate wants us as neighbors, darling. We'll see each other every day."
The cloud of sadness on Jerrold's face dispersed, replaced by a radiant grin that warmed Lilah's heart.
How had Gerard, a man renowned for his reserved demeanor, ended up with such a charming child?
As Lilah and Jerrold exchanged smiles, Gerard interjected, "Miss Phillips, you can see he's quite fond of you. Currently, you seem to be the only one who can calm him. Might I request a small favor?"
