Gerard didn't respond to the message immediately.
So Lilah turned her attention back to her work.
Time flew by, and evening began to approach. Soon, the city Lights were shining through her window.
As the office darkened, Lilah turned on the lights and rubbed her tired eyes. Then, she picked up her phone and looked at it. To her surprise, she found that there was no message from Gerard.
Normally, even when Gerard was busy, he would reply to her messages within an hour at most.
Could it be that he was angry now?
Well, that was a reasonable explanation. If she was in his shoes, she would be angry too.
So Lilah decided to do something. She left the office and went straight to Starlight Mansion.
Jerrold had since been picked up from school by the driver. When Lilah saw him, she happily embraced him and asked, "Baby, how was your day at kindergarten today?"
"Fine," Jerrold said with a grin. Then he asked her, "Mommy, why did you leave work so early today?"
"I missed you; that's why I came back early," Lilah said and gave him a kiss. "Now, I want to go make dinner. What would you like to eat?"
“Anything. As long as it's something made by you, I'll like it," the little boy said excitedly.
Lilah was blown away by his sweetness. She loved him so much.
When she got to the kitchen and started cooking, Jerrold came to join her and even helped her with a few things.
She made a few dishes. It looked like a delicious meal. She took pictures of them and sent them to Gerard, with the caption, "Will you come back home for dinner? I have something to discuss with you."
Yet, there was still no response of any kind from Gerard.
At about 8 o'clock, Jerrold and Lilah were very hungry, so they decided to have dinner without Gerard.
By now, Jerrold had noticed that Lilah was in a bad mood. He handed her a piece of spare rib and said in consolation, "Mommy, don't worry. Daddy often works late and comes home late."
Clearly, the child was already used to it.
"Yes, baby," Lilah replied. "I know and I'm not worried. Come on, eat more."
Jerrold's fair and tender appearance warmed Lilah's heart very much.
After they finished eating, Lilah washed the dishes.
By the time it was bedtime for Jerrold, Lilah took him to his bedroom and tucked him in. Still, Gerard had not come home.
Lilah tried calling him repeatedly, but there was no answer. She couldn't help but feel very worried.
