Though Marlene's family had a good position in Rivendell, Rivendell was still slightly inferior to Eleywood. Her family's business, though it was top-rated, could not be compared with the Harris family's businesses.
Moreover, the Harris family was a century-old plutocratic family that had a close relationship with the major movers and shakers in the country.
Marlene had been abroad, so she had no idea about the relationship between Lilah and Gerard.
After a brief moment of panic, she finally came to her senses and said, “It's impossible. You must be lying. How could Mr. Harris' child be with are at aren't you? Lilah, you very good lying, you?
You almost made me believe you."
But Lance and Onyx knew that what Lilah had said was true.
Marlene didn't know the relationship between Lilah and Gerard, but they knew it. So it was not surprising to them that Lilah was with Gerard's child. The surprising thing was that Marlene had insulted Gerard's child.
Onyx, who had been through countless trials and tribulations throughout his life, was now as scared as a child. By now, a cold sweat had broken out on his back. He stared at Lilah, trying to figure out whether or not she was really telling the truth about the insult. Judging from Lilah's calm demeanor, it didn't look like she was making false claims.
"Well, if you don't believe me, there's nothing I can do about it."
Lilah shrugged carelessly. "Nevertheless, Dillon Group is awesome and it will soon become history in Rivendell.
"Stop lying," Marlene rebuked her. But almost instantly, she was hit hard by Onyx.
Onyx blurted out, "Who said you can talk to your cousin like this?
Apologize to her."
"Dad!" Marlene looked at her father, her face a mix of disbelief and confusion. She wondered why he wasn't scolding Lilah instead.
Onyx whispered something in Marlene's ear, prompting a shocked response from her. “It's impossible. It's impossible..."
“Enough! Apologize!" Onyx's voice boomed with anger.
He wasn't intimidated by Lilah but had his reservations about Gerard.
The high-level enterprises in Hualand were all too aware of Gerard's power. Onyx didn't want to risk the Dillon Group's downfall at his hands.
Marlene, fighting back tears and with a clenched jaw, forced an apology. “Lilah, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to do that. I didn't know the child was Mr. Harris' child."
“What did you say? I didn't hear it clearly," Lilah said, sipping her drink with a calm that seemed to mock Marlene.
Marlene's frustration boiled over. She despised Lilah's nonchalance and imagined how satisfying it would be to silence her.
"Lilah, I didn't mean to do that. Please don't tell Mr. Harris,"
Marlene said, louder this time, her nails digging into her palms.
“Well, it depends on my mood," Lilah replied slowly.
