Their stay in the garden was brief. Laura's health was a concern and they didn't want her to catch a cold in the evening. So, they eventually returned to the ward.

Initially, Walter had been apprehensive that Laura might not handle the news about Gerard well but he soon realized he had been overthinking it. Laura accepted the situation gracefully and engaged in a warm conversation with Lilah. To outsiders, they could easily be mistaken for sisters.

“Is your family here?"

Suddenly, a nurse pushed the door open and entered. “Please ask your family to contact the doctor."

Laura had just awakened and there was undoubtedly much to discuss with her family. Upon hearing this, Walter stood up.

Laura smiled and said, "Gerard, you should go with Walter. There's probably a lot to discuss and I'm afraid he might forget what the doctor says.”

It was a minor matter, so Gerard agreed. His deep, intense gaze fixed on Lilah as he spoke in hushed tones. “Wait for me to return."

With a playful glint, Laura quipped, “What's that supposed to mean, Gerard? You make it sound like Lilah isn't safe with me."

“I'm off," he declared.

And with that, Gerard and Walter departed together.

Now, only two individuals remained in the ward and a sudden hush descended upon the atmosphere.

Lilah maintained a quiet gaze on Laura as the latter tidied her attire. Then, Laura switched on the television and began to watch, casting an air of awkwardness over the room.

Nonetheless, Lilah wasn't overly concerned about it. She had encountered people like Laura before but she hadn't anticipated that Laura possessed more depth than she'd initially thought. If Laura had immediately expressed her discontent, she might have been considered forthright, but the way Laura could feign indifference was remarkable.

In comparison to Laura, Adaline seemed like a trivial matter.

Lilah had faced countless challenges in life, leaving her unafraid.

“Lilah, I'm feeling a bit thirsty. Would you mind fetching me a glass of water?"

Laura looked at Lilah with watery eyes.

“Of course," Lilah replied with a smile. If Laura wanted to maintain the facade of friendship, Lilah was more than willing to play along.

She rose from her seat and went to the tea table to pour a glass of water. She handed it to Laura. However, as Laura reached for the glass, her fingers unexpectedly trembled, causing hot water to splash onto Lilah.

At that very moment, the door swung open.

Instantly, Laura leaned toward Lilah, even though it meant her own sleeves got soaked with hot water. Her eyes glistened with moisture as she implored, "Lilah, are you all right?"

Walter hurried to Laura's side, his expression filled with concern.

“Laura, are you alright?"

"I'm fine; I just didn't have a steady grip on the glass and nearly scalded Lilah," Laura reassured him swiftly. "I'm relieved she's unharmed."
