Laura pursed her lips and explained, "My mom has her own career, and she's incredibly busy."
“Well, if I were your mother, I'd bring my work to the ward and take care of you at the same time," Lilah sighed wistfully.
Laura remained silent. Lilah's tone sounded caring yet somewhat sarcastic.
Walter, observing this, couldn't shake the feeling that Lilah was being cunning. She indirectly mocked both Laura and her mother. He also felt a twinge of disapproval toward Tracy; her daughter had just woken up, yet her focus seemed more on work than on her child's wellbeing.
"Rest up, Laura. The doctor recommends more exercise. You should be ready to leave in a couple of weeks," Gerard advised. His gaze softened as he turned to look at Lilah. "Shall we head back now?"
Lilah, wearing an expression of worry, agreed. "Yes, seeing Laura in this state pains me. I'll visit again soon."
Laura nodded, her voice low and gentle. "I'll wait for your visit, Lilah."
"Okay."
With that, Lilah and Gerard exited the hospital room.
Walter rubbed his head, perplexed. “Laura, since when have you and Gerard's wife become so close?"
Lilah's expression turned icy. "Gerard's wife? Isn't that a bit premature? Gerard and Lilah are just dating. If things don't work out, Lilah will be embarrassed."
Walter murmured in a low voice, “But Gerard always says in front of us that Lilah's his wife."
Laura, taken aback, was at a loss for words.
She gripped the bedsheets, her gaze drifting to the moonlit night outside her window.
On the drive back, Gerard frequently glanced at Lilah, sensing something amiss.
“What's on your mind? If there's something you want to say, just say it," Lilah prompted, breaking the silence.
"Are you concerned about Laura?" Gerard's tone was laced with confusion.
It seemed that even with his vast experience in the business world, he struggled to understand the dynamic between the two women.
Lilah's response was thoughtful. “I just feel a bit sorry for her.
I plan to visit her whenever I can."
“Really?” Gerard questioned, one eyebrow arching skeptically.
Lilah's expression turned slightly playful, her lips pouting as she met his gaze. “What do you think? Am I lying?"
“Of course not," Gerard quickly assured, pausing for a moment. "It's just that, if your visits are for my sake, it's unnecessary. Walter's there for her now."
Lilah shook her head gently. "Don't worry. It's not about you. I genuinely believe she's a sweet and innocent girl."
