Did he not hold a significant place in this family dynamic?
The teacher announced, “Let me outline the rules. Parents will stand side by side, with one of their legs tied to their partner's corresponding leg. Solo parents can partner with a teacher or another parent. The children's task is to use chopsticks to transfer balls from one box to another. Every successful transfer allows a downed parent a chance to stand back up or, if not needed, earns a point.
The team with the most points at the end is declared the winner."
As parents and children paired up, excitement filled the air.
Yet, as Lilah found her ankle bound to Gerard's, she felt an unexpected flutter of shyness.
"We should lead with our tied leg," she proposed.
A twinkle in his eyes, Gerard responded, "Sounds good."
She thought she detected a trace of affection in his voice. Shaking her head, she dismissed the thought, believing she was reading too much into it.
"Get ready! Three, two, one... Begin!" the teacher shouted.
The participants sprang into action.
Children focused on transferring balls with chopsticks, eager to notch up points for their families.
Holden, athletic by nature, shot a smug look Jerrold's way, boasting, “He may have brains, but we've got the brawn!"
"We'll show him this time!" chimed in another child, youthful confidence evident in his voice.
Determined not to face another defeat, Holly concentrated on her task.
Holden's nimble pace with the ball drew admiring glances. But just as he neared the destination, the ball slipped from his grasp.
A wave of laughter echoed from the crowd.
Red-faced, Holden returned to the starting point to retrieve another ball. His eagerness, however, resulted in more fumbles.
The same went for many of the kids. Nerves got the better of them, causing shaky hands. Amidst this, Jerrold displayed remarkable poise, smoothly moving balls to the destination box.
“Look at Jerrold go! Kids, keep pushing! Your parents are rooting for you!" the teacher cheered.
In the three-legged portion, missteps sent several pairs tumbling.
Lilah and Gerard weren't exempt. In a rushed move, Lilah misstepped, causing them to Lurch. Gerard's firm grip around her waist prevented a fall, but they had to wait for Jerrold's next successful transfer to proceed.
Their proximity allowed Lilah to catch a subtle hint of Gerard's woody scent. A warmth flushed her cheeks, intensified by the lingering feeling of his hand around her waist.
Maggie, paired with another solo parent, was bent on surpassing Lilah.
She'd been rallying her partner with chants, trying to match Lilah's pace. Witnessing Lilah and Gerard's closeness, envy surged within her.
