"Yeah," Gerard responded, his reply brief and casual.

As Laura and Gerard stood together, murmurs rippled through the crowd.

“Look at how Laura's dress complements Mr. Harris’ black suit."

“They're like a match made in heaven," someone else added.

Marlene, observing this, couldn't hide her envy and a hint of jealousy. It seemed every woman wished to be in Laura's place.

But then, when she caught sight of Lilah, Marlene's spirits lifted.

"Looks Like someone's fallen out of favor. What a shame! By the way, don't you think you and Laura look alike? That's what being a substitute means, right?"

Lilah, unfazed by Marlene's barb, retorted with a light glance, “And what does that make you? Just a bystander?"

Marlene was taken aback, Lilah's words stinging more than she cared to admit. Despite Lilah's sharp retort, it didn't change the perception of her as a stand-in.

However, Laura, sensing the tension, quickly intervened, "Let's not make any assumptions about Gerard and me. We're just friends. And Lilah is still here."

She then deliberately drew Lilah closer. "I actually think Lilah and Gerard are a much better fit."

Lilah gave Laura a brief glance.

Laura's easygoing and agreeable demeanor made it hard for anyone to dislike her. This, coupled with the narrative of her past with Gerard, stirred sympathy among the attendees.

To many, Lilah seemed Like an interloper in a romantic story meant for Laura and Gerard. The resemblance between Lilah and Laura only fueled speculation that Lilah was merely a stand-in for Laura.

But then, Gerard's deep voice cut through the murmurs.

"Yes, Lilah is my girlfriend," he stated firmly, drawing Lilah to his side and intertwining his fingers with hers.

His assertive demeanor silenced the room. "I don't want to hear any more of this talk. Thank you."

The crowd was taken aback, particularly Marlene, whose disbelief was evident. She seemed almost resentful of the bond between Gerard and Lilah.

Despite the initial shock, people soon began to offer their congratulations to Lilah and Gerard.

Lilah's heart swelled with warmth, and her eyes sparkled with happiness.

After a while, feeling hungry, Lilah excused herself to grab a bite.

The steak was satisfying, but the cake was particularly delightful.

She glanced at Gerard, mingling in the crowd, and wondered if he might be hungry as well.

As if sensing her gaze, Gerard looked up, his eyes softening.
