"This land is teeming with valuable resources and we're eager to witness the remarkable projects you'll bring to life."
Although they were offering praise to Lance and Marlene, a hint of irony laced their words, unmistakable to the discerning ear.
Lance maintained his courteous demeanor, though irritation had already taken root within him. Marlene, too, grappled with a sense of injustice. Only now, as she found her composure, did she recognize the folly of her actions.
A realization dawned upon her suddenly, one that stemmed from thinking about the relentless provocations from the small company and Lilah.
Marlene had spent numerous years abroad. While she might be quick to anger, she was not a complete fool. She swiftly discerned that something was amiss.
"It's you, Lilah!"
Marlene seized Lilah's clothing, poised to deliver an angry slap.
Gladys promptly intercepted Marlene's hand, her tone frigid as she inquired, “What are you doing?"
“Lilah, you have a connection with the man from that small company, don't you? You conspired in this scheme intentionally!" Marlene's eyes blazed with anger.
Lance, astute and perceptive, grasped Marlene's insinuation immediately. He fixed Lilah with a penetrating, calculating gaze.
Lilah nonchalantly shrugged and retorted, "I don't follow."
“Enough with the charade! I observed that the small company refrained from bidding for any land except for plot number three. You conspired with them to vex me, didn't you? You bitch! You've crossed a line this time!"
Marlene's eyes were ablaze with intense dislike.
"Marlene, you'll need concrete evidence, or I can bring a slander lawsuit against you," Lilah replied casually, yet the glint in her eyes conveyed, “Even if you discover the truth, what power do you hold over me?"
Marlene was seething, her desire to confront Lilah nearly overwhelming.
However, Lance intervened, grasping Marlene's hand and murmuring softly, “That's enough. Let's depart for now."
Continuing the dispute here would only serve to further tarnish their reputations.
Lance fixed a frosty gaze on Lilah and remarked, “Lilah, I eagerly anticipate future encounters with you."
With that, he led Marlene away.
Lilah and Gladys returned to their company.
Gladys inquired, “My goodness, is what Marlene said true? Is this all your doing?"
Lilah responded, "Well, it's mostly due to Marlene's youthful impulsivity. She's easily provoked. If it were Lance, I wouldn't stand a chance."
Even so, Gladys gave Lilah a thumbs-up and lauded, "You're truly remarkable."
With a genial smile, Lilah remarked, “I'll need each of you to put in extra effort in the days ahead."
