Deciding to act preemptively, Lilah thought to visit the hospital sooner than she had originally planned.
Turning to Jerrold, she asked softly, “Baby, are you hungry? I can buy you some snacks, and then I have a place we need to visit before dinner. Is that okay?"
Jerrold cheerfully declined, "No, thanks, Mommy. I'm not hungry. I had snacks at kindergarten this afternoon."
Despite his assurance, Lilah bought him some bread, just in case his hunger struck later. They then set off for the hospital.
At NorthStrett Hospital, Brenda's concern was evident.
“Laura, how are you feeling?" she inquired gently.
Laura responded with a look of compliance. "I'm doing okay. My bruises ache at times, but it's nothing serious. I appreciate your visit. I never meant to cause you any trouble."
Her glance toward Marlene carried a hint of feigned reproach.
Marlene, biting back her frustration, spoke up with evident reluctance. “Laura, you might think I'm overstepping, but your kindness is your downfall. If you don't stand up for yourself, others will only grow bolder."
Brenda's frown deepened. “Can someone please explain what's going on?" she asked.
Before Laura could respond, Marlene interjected, "Mrs. Harris, it's like this-Lilah attacked Laura in the restroom but won't own up to it. The surveillance footage shows only them entering during that time. Laura, be forthright. What really happened in there?"
Brenda turned to Laura, encouraging her to speak. "Go ahead, Laura."
Laura hesitated, and then sighed deeply. "Well, when I saw Lilah leaving her cubicle in the restroom, I wanted to clarify that Gerard and I were just friends. I didn't want any misunderstandings. But, unexpectedly, Lilah lost her temper. She pushed me, and I was shocked.
It was like seeing a completely different person—"
Marlene couldn't resist adding her piece. “Just as I've been saying, Lilah is only feigning kindness to deceive Mr. Harris. She fears Laura might reclaim his affections. It's clear she's both petty and malicious."
Brenda gave Marlene a withering look, her voice carrying a weight that commanded respect. "I did not give you the floor to speak," she said.
Despite her age, Brenda exuded a commanding presence, silencing Marlene.
Laura's eyes flickered with an unreadable emotion as she addressed Brenda in a soft tone. "Mrs. Harris, I implore you, let's not dwell on anger. It seems to be a big misunderstanding. Perhaps Lilah misconstrued my intentions, leading to her actions."
“If it's a misunderstanding, then you two should reconcile and maintain your friendship," Brenda suggested.
Laura's hands balled into fists.
Despite the apparent assault, Brenda seemed to harbor no suspicions toward Lilah.
Laura couldn't help but wonder if Lilah had somehow charmed the Harris family.
She offered a feeble smile, nodding while a shadow of disappointment crossed her face.
Brenda, having watched Laura grow, felt a pang of sympathy. “Rest up, Laura. I'll ensure the hospital provides top-notch care and medication. They'll make sure no scars mar your face or body. And I'll remind them to monitor your diet closely," she said with genuine concern.
