She was just a girlfriend and she already had a child? She must have had the child just to secure her position. The manager had seen many women like this before. Sarcasm filled his eyes as he spoke.
"Oh, I'm sorry. Mr. Harris' girlfriend is really beautiful." The insincere note in his voice was obvious. Then, he told Walter he had something else to take care of and left.
With the manager gone, Marlene didn't hesitate to express her thoughts. “Everyone must have thought the same thing. Back when we were in school, everyone thought you and Mr. Harris would get married, Laura. I don't think there's a better match for Mr. Harris than you."
"Marlene, stop saying absurdities. There are many outstanding girls out there. I'm not that special," Laura said with false modesty.
"You're just too modest. I'm sure you could read through the manager, right? Anyone would agree that you and Mr. Harris are a much better match," Marlene said insistently.
"Dad?" Jerrold called, tugging at Gerard's sleeve.
Gerard looked down at his son.
Having caught his father's attention, Jerrold glanced sideways at Marlene and said, "I never knew what the word ‘busybody' meant, but I think I get it now. It should be referring to someone Like her, right? Someone who likes to gossip and meddle in other people's business, right?"
Marlene was stunned by the child's remark.
Laughter escaped from Walter's mouth before he swiftly snapped it close.
Lilah too couldn't hold back her smile. She had never seen this facet of Jerrold before, and she had to say she loved it.
Marlene was now flushed red in embarrassment. Being called out by a child wasn't particularly pleasant. Worse, she couldn't even react like she normally would because it would be more shameful.
This annoying little brat!
Despite the resentment she felt, she still managed to use a gentle tone. "Sweetie, I'm not a busybody. I am just talking about things that happened before."
“But it's all in the past, and it concerns other people. So, if you like gossiping about other people's lives, what more are you if not a busybody?" Jerrold retorted, his big eyes filled with confusion.
Marlene felt like she would die from the humiliation. If only she could strangle this little brat!
Lilah was not even his biological mom. Why was he standing up for her?
"I was just making conversation, Jerrold. Shouldn't we talk when we're together?" Marlene said, and then in a last attempt to save face, she decided to take it out on Lilah. "Lilah, is this how you teach the child at home? If you don't give your children proper home training, they'll go out and make other people think their parents didn't raise them right."
“Actually, I'm the one teaching him. Are you saying I'm not doing a good job?" interrupted a cold voice, his masculine face turning dark and his aura pervading.
Marlene instantly shrank in fear. "What? No, Mr. Harris. That's not what I meant!" Her voice was unnaturally high.
Lilah casually took a sip of her water and said, "Since you seem to enjoy talking about the past so much, I remember you were quite a number back in high school. You almost drove a boy to commit suicide.
He had a very bright future, but dropped out thanks to you. I hear he's been struggling ever since."
Very few people knew about this secret Lilah mentioned. In high school, Marlene was the typical arrogant girl with bad grades. When a top student fell in love with her, she strung him along although she had no feelings whatsoever for him. When he had satisfied her ego, she chose to be with someone else and abandoned the top student.
Devastated, the top student fell into depression and nearly committed suicide. He would have surely died had he not been rushed to the hospital in time.
