Engaging in light conversation for a while, Felipe and his family eventually took their leave.
As the hour grew late, Richard and Brenda retired to bed, while Lilah and Gerard returned to their room.
“Why didn't we see your uncle today?" Lilah inquired casually.
“He has passed away," Gerard said.
Lilah felt a twinge of sympathy. Observing her expression, Gerard spoke gently. “It's alright. It's not a secret. The Harris family is affluent and influential, dealing with numerous matters. There was an incident where someone kidnapped my father and my uncle. Eventually, my uncle managed to get my father out but he lost his life in that den of thieves."
This was why Richard took responsibility for Felipe and his family.
"Oh my God!" Lilah's countenance grew somber. While she was aware of the hazards of being a member of a wealthy and powerful family, hearing the story firsthand still shocked her. "Then we must ensure Jerrold's safety. It appears we'll need to maintain a low profile in the future."
"Indeed, but don't fret. I will safeguard you diligently," Gerard assured, sealing his words with a kiss on her forehead.
The night enveloped them in a tranquil hush.
As dawn unfolded its tendrils, the family gathered around the table.
Understanding the unspoken etiquette among the affluent, Lilah maintained a quiet demeanor while partaking in the meal. Jerrold handed her a piece of bread, prompting her to express gratitude, "Thank you, Jerrold," accompanied by a tender smile.
Breaking the silence, Brenda addressed Lilah abruptly. “Lilah."
Startled, Lilah hastily responded, "Yes?"
A nervous tension settled within her. Was she wrong to have spoken up just now?
However, Brenda regarded her with a kind smile and queried, "Have you pondered over your relationship with Gerard?"
"What?"
What did Brenda mean?
Confusion clouded Lilah's expression.
Frowning, Brenda turned her gaze to Gerard. "Haven't you discussed it with her?"
Maintaining a composed countenance, Gerard reassured, “Mom, don't worry. We're doing well, aren't we?"
"Then it's settled. You should get married. Marriage opens the door to more joy and perhaps you'll welcome a daughter!" Brenda asserted with earnest conviction.
The prospect of Gerard and Lilah having both a son and a daughter filled her with delight.
Lilah comprehended the message: Brenda was suggesting that she and Gerard should tie the knot.
Despite her gratitude for the Harris family's indifference to social status, Lilah hesitated on the topic of marriage.
