The competition, lasting two hours, allowed each child a drawing board to express their creativity. The judges would later select the top three.
This challenge was not only physically demanding but also a true test of the children's focus and concentration.
Some children lost interest quickly, but Jerrold submitted his drawing after just an hour.
Vera, dismissing Jerrold, focused on her work until the very end, one of the last to submit.
Brenda noted, “Vera's determination is impressive."
Jenna beamed. “I've always encouraged her to be thorough in whatever she does."
The judging commenced.
Most artworks seemed average until one particular piece caught everyone's attention. The painting, while simple, displayed an exquisite portrayal of nature and animals.
Even Kenneth rated it highly.
Jenna was elated, assuming it was Vera's work.
"Is this Vera's?" Brenda inquired. “It's excellent."
"I believe so. Vera usually excels," Jenna replied proudly.
The crowd admired the painting, praising the unknown young artist.
"It's heartening to see such hidden talent here," a spectator commented. “I'm glad I told my child not to worry about their rank."
As the crowd speculated about Kenneth taking on the talented young artist as his apprentice, Jenna grew increasingly confident that Vera would be the chosen one.
But the unveiling of the next painting left everyone speechless.
"Could a child really have drawn this?"
"It's breathtaking. I'd love to add it to my collection."
“The depth and mood of this piece are extraordinary."
The painting depicted a vast, layered starry sky, both simple and complex, exuding a sense of peace and realism.
The judges, including the usually critical Kenneth, were impressed, with scores nearing perfection.
Jenna, momentarily confused, wondered if Vera had created this masterpiece.
She marveled at the skill demonstrated. Surely, this would secure Vera's place as Kenneth's apprentice.
"This must be Vera's work," Jenna remarked to Brenda, smiling.
