Marlene considered this; Gerard's intimidating presence was well-known.
The important thing was that the plan had been executed. Lilah now lost Gerard's support, and she would likely face his disdain too.
A sense of triumphant glee filled Marlene. "I'll leave the payment somewhere for you to collect later," she said.
George then inquired, “How did you know about the banquet's address and arrange for me to work as a waiter?"
Marlene's response was curt. “That's not for you to worry about." Yet, feeling pleased with herself, she added, "Let's just say I have my connections at the banquet."
"Oh? Miss Phillips, you really are something. This banquet is full of the Harris family's relatives. How do you know them?" George asked.
"Not everyone there is a relative," Marlene replied, growing weary of the conversation. “Just remember, keep this a secret. If it leaks, you'll lose more than just your payout.”
“I won't breathe a word," George assured.
With the money dispatched, Marlene hummed contentedly.
Her assistant, intrigued by her mood, asked, “Miss Phillips, is there good news?"
“Indeed.” Marlene grinned. “The Phillips Group will soon be stepping stones for us."
The assistant's eyes sparkled. "Their mall too?"
"Absolutely. That mall will soon be in our hands," Marlene declared triumphantly, envisioning the imminent takeover of the Phillips Group.
Her daydream was abruptly interrupted by a knock on the door. Police officers entered.
"Marlene Phillips? You're accused of slander. Please come with us."
Marlene, shocked, protested, “This must be a mistake. Is Lilah behind this? I've done nothing wrong."
“You'll find out at the station," one of the officers responded, unswayed by her claims.
Despite her initial anger, Marlene quickly regained her composure.
She believed Lilah must be desperate to do anything in retaliation.
Lilah would suffer the consequences of making a false accusation later.
Marlene had thought she could use her father's influence against Lilah, but she hadn't expected to see George at the police station.
His guilty glance said it all. Marlene's realization was swift.
“This is the man you hired to defame Lilah, and you paid him two hundred thousand dollars," declared the officer.
Marlene faced custody and a fine.
