John countered, "The Rhodes family's stature in Rivendell is substantial. Their alliance bolsters our image, and our histories are intertwined. Ending this partnership so suddenly will stir speculation."
His gaze fixed on Gerard, John added pointedly, “Is this decision influenced by Lilah?"
Gerard's eyes sharpened, his silent response seeming to affirm John's suspicion.
Displeased, John pressed on, “We've placed our trust in you, Gerard.
But Lilah-she's not the right fit for you."
Other directors joined the debate, comparing the Phillips and Rhodes families.
"I manage my personal life independently. Lilah is exceptional, beyond compare," Gerard declared firmly, silencing the murmurs.
John, undeterred, echoed Laura's earlier concerns. "Gerard, reconsider.
A distinguished man like you matches better with someone of Laura's caliber. Lilah doesn't fit."
“I'm aware of who's best for me," Gerard retorted, his demeanor icy.
“Lilah is my choice. My personal life isn't up for discussion."
"Gerard, this is about your well-being and the company's future.
Laura, as the sole heir to the Rhodes estate, could bring that under our wing," John persisted.
The board members continued advocating for Laura, praising her virtues over Lilah's modest origins. “Laura is a far better match.
Remember, she even risked her life to save you,” they urged.
Gerard's voice, colder than before, cut through the room, “I don't need advice on personal matters."
The intensity in his gaze quelled any further objections.
After the meeting, Gerard retreated to his office. Weary, he massaged his temples. Just then, his phone rang, pulling him from his thoughts.
"Hello?" Gerard's voice, deep and slightly hoarse, filled the line.
"Is something wrong? You sound troubled," came Lilah's warm and soothing reply.
Regaining his composure, Gerard confessed, “Nothing major. I just miss you."
His voice, rich with affection, conveyed his longing.
“I miss you too," Lilah responded, her shyness evident.
Brushing off her embarrassment, she broached a new topic. "I heard about the end of your partnership with the Rhodes family."
