Effie couldn't help but laugh. “Okay, let's stop joking."

“Do you think I'm kidding? I'm very serious," Walter told her. Indeed, he was very serious about the issue.

"It doesn't matter," Effie said casually. "After I've worked hard for a few years and quit the entertainment industry, I can eat as much food as I want."

"Okay then. I'll hold you to your word. In fact, we'll both do it together," Walter said with a smile.

"Really?"

“Of course, yes. When have I ever lied to you?" Walter asked, looking at her with a serious look in his eyes.

But apart from seriousness, there seemed to be other emotions in that pair of charming eyes. After a single glance, Effie looked away when she felt her heart skip a beat.

Effie felt unsettled. She reminded herself not to overthink things and not to forget that Walter was a playboy. How could he have genuine feelings for her?

She attempted to soothe her nerves, but her efforts were in vain.

Later, when she emerged from the restroom, Effie's ears caught a familiar voice. She looked in the direction of the voice and saw Gerard and Walter conversing near the stairway.

Gerard's voice was tinged with disbelief. "Are you serious?"

Walter replied with unusual earnestness, "Of course, I'm not joking about this."

After a moment of contemplation, Gerard spoke firmly. “She's my sister. Hurt her, and I won't be kind."

“Of course. My love is never a joke," Walter affirmed, his voice reflecting sincerity. “I had plans to pursue Effie after sorting out my family's issues. But now, seeing someone else step in, I can't stand back and watch her get hurt again."

His thoughts turned to Winston with disdain.

Walter had cared for Effie since her childhood. How could he tolerate her suffering at Winston's hands?

He regretted not acting sooner. Had he done so, Effie might have been spared Winston's ill-treatment.

As Walter concluded, he spotted someone approaching. His eyes flickered with surprise, but he maintained his composure and greeted her with a smile. "Effie."

Effie returned Walter's gaze, her feelings a complex mix.

Gerard, sensing Effie had something on her mind, discreetly excused himself .

This left Effie and Walter alone in the staircase, a quiet tension hanging in the air.

Walter's gaze was fixed on Effie as he asked, "Did you hear what I said just now?"

Effie nodded in confirmation. "Yes."

“Do you have any thoughts on it?" Walter pressed, his curiosity evident.
