Since he couldn't find what he was looking for, Absolon closed the report.
He realized that he had acted impulsively today.
The next day, while she was at work, Lilah suddenly recalled Absolon's words.
She had never really seen her mother before. No matter what, it was important that she should get a good look at the woman who gave birth to her.
When she closed from work, she returned to the Phillips family residence.
Matthew grinned from ear to ear when he saw her.
He had been wondering about how he could improve his relationship with Lilah. Since she had come back to the family residence, he now felt that Lilah must treasure family values. Hence, she might not really sever ties with him after all.
"Welcome home, Lilah. Why didn't you inform us ahead of time so we could prepare something delicious? By the way, what would you like to have? Anything you want, I'll cook it for you," he said with a smile.
"I want to see my mother," Lilah said unsmiling.
“Your mother is playing cards at her friend's house," Matthew replied with a shrug.
But when he noticed the cold look in her eyes, it dawned on him what Lilah meant. He averted his eyes, cleared his throat, and asked, “Why do you want to see her all of a sudden?"
"I've never seen her before. I'm her daughter. I want to spend a moment with her. In which cemetery was she buried?"
Matthew sighed and said, “It's a long story. To make it brief, your mother didn't like to be restrained, so she asked me to scatter her ashes in the sea. When she passed away, I followed her wish to the letter."
"You didn't even erect a tombstone for her?" Lilah asked in surprise.
"No, I didn't," Matthew said with a shake of his head.
Lilah's face went dark.
In her eyes, Matthew was either too cold-hearted or he was lying to her. If she was to guess, she would choose the latter.
She couldn't help but wonder why he always lied to her.
"Give me her photos then," she requested.
"She doesn't have any pictures," Matthew replied. "She disliked taking photos."
At this point, Matthew could tell that Lilah was annoyed, so he hurriedly added, "Lilah, you don't come home often. Now that you're here, don't think too much about the past. Just relax and feel at home. Tell me what you would like to have and I'll prepare it for you."
"No, thanks," Lilah said and got up to leave.
Back in her car, the more she thought about it, the more weird it seemed. So she decided to investigate about her mother herself. She had to know who her mother was and what she looked like.
She guessed the court would be able to help her with this, so she hacked the court's server to find her father's marital records in order to see what his first wife looked Like.
