"Miss Morris, you're my only support." Krista beamed. "I bet Effie won't even make it past the next round."
Meanwhile, Effie vented to Lilah. "You're finally here. Karol's methods are ridiculous and don't suit me at all. She claims I know nothing about music. I'm not formally trained, but I've studied for years."
As a member of the Harris family, Effie was raised to be well-rounded, music being one of her many lessons.
Jerrold chimed in, “Aunt, you must stand up for yourself."
"I'm more than ready to. If she weren't a Morris, she'd regret it," said Effie with a huff.
“Don't worry. We have a few days before the next round, and I'll help you every evening. You'll improve, I'm sure," Lilah reassured her.
“Really? That's great, Lilah."
As they practiced, Jerrold and Gerard sat nearby. Gerard busied himself with his laptop, handling work, while Jerrold leaned close, admiring his mother.
He was in awe of her!
After a session with Lilah, Effie was amazed. She knew Lilah could sing, but her theoretical knowledge was a surprise. “You're amazing, Lilah. I feel so much better after your help."
"Give it a shot," Lilah encouraged.
With Lilah's guidance, Effie began to sing, her voice growing stronger.
Over time, Lilah grew quite pleased with Effie's progress.
"I'll return tomorrow then," she said.
In the ensuing days, Lilah dedicated an hour post-work to coach Effie.
Word spread of Effie rejecting Karol's mentorship in favor of Lilah.
Many dismissed Lilah as an amateur unlikely to offer much help.
As the next round approached, the consensus was that Effie's journey would end there.
After all, she wasn't a professional, and making it this far was seen as fortunate.
Krista led off the performances, captivating everyone with her voice.
“Karol's guidance is really something. Krista's improved so much."
“Her high notes were a struggle before, but now she nails them."
“Miss Morris truly has a gift."
ALL eyes were on Karol, who received such praise with a serene demeanor.
