Walter spoke up. “Let's handle this by the book. Do we still want such a singer?"
“Alright, Mr. Morrison. Krista Benton's getting the boot and we'll dish out the punishment by the book. From now on, she's out of every singing contest."
Krista passed out and hit the floor.
The waitress was soon under arrest by the cops. She had played the accomplice and now had to face the music.
Before the handcuffs clicked, she pleaded with Effie, "I'm sorry, Miss Harris. I didn't mean for things to go this way. I was just trying to save my little brother. Please, release me."
Lilah approached and the waitress showed a glimmer of hope. She figured the rich folks were kind-hearted and would aim to keep their good name. She thought people would blame Effie and Lilah if she got hauled off.
Mockery flared in the waitress's eyes. She knew the well-off cared about their dignity and pride.
"So, in your world, everyone facing a tough time should just harm others?" Lilah questioned, making everyone ponder her words.
The waitress went pale. Her Lips moved but not a word came out. The authorities led her away.
With the drama settled, the contest rolled on.
Effie snagged the top prize with her killer performance. The crowd went wild.
After the post-game interview, Effie hopped back in the car, eyeing Lilah with excitement. “Lilah, did you write that song yourself?"
"No, I didn't."
Effie couldn't believe what she heard. "So, who's the brain behind this awesome song? The song is fabulous. It feels like I've lived through those lyrics..."
The song seemed like a page torn from her own life.
Lilah grinned. "The composer's far away and yet nearby. Look closely and you might figure it out someday.”
“Lilah, spare me the riddles, please. You know I wasn't top of the class. I can't crack your codes." Effie playfully stuck out her tongue.
Jerrold gave her an eye roll. Handing over his gift, he said, “Aunt Effie, congrats!"
“Wow! Did you prepare this for me, Jerrold?"
Effie was genuinely surprised. Jerrold had never gifted her anything before. Opening the box, she found a dictionary, her face going from shock to amusement.
“What's the deal? Lilah, Jerrold's messing with me." Despite being his aunt, Effie felt the sting. Jerrold looked down on her and it ticked her off.
Jerrold shot back seriously, “Aunt Effie, when you're home, your language and sayings are all over the place. That's why I got you the dictionary. You won't stress about interviews anymore."
Effie wasn't into learning and she often misused idioms.
Past interviews had portrayed her unfairly, tagging her as a beauty with a low IQ.
