Lilah recalled what Effie had told her in the afternoon and explained, "Oh, Effie went shopping.”
Hearing this, Brenda groaned and complained, "She rarely stays at home! If only she could bring back a boyfriend. If you ask me, I think it's about time for her to start acting maturely."
Brenda wanted both her children to get married and have a family so that she could finally get a rest.
"I'll talk to her later," Gerard said. He felt that he needed to find an opportunity to have a good talk with Effie about Walter.
Hearing this, Lilah smiled and said, "You don't have to worry about it. When she finds the person who deserves her trust and love, she'll get married."
Brenda wasn't convinced by Lilah's words. "If only Effie were as sensible as you, then I don't have to worry about her," Brenda said with a frown.
While the three of them were having a conversation, Richard stayed silent and didn't utter a single word. The truth was that for a family like theirs, the most reliable plan was to get married via political means.
He had wanted Laura to be his daughter-in-law, but now...
After dinner, Richard said with a sullen face, "Gerard, come with me."
Then, he went upstairs.
Before he followed his father, Gerard looked at Lilah and said, "Stay with my mother for a while. We'll leave later."
"Okay, go ahead," Lilah said in a soft voice.
Gerard nodded and headed straight into the study. When he got there, he saw his father sitting on the sofa. "Dad, what's wrong?" he asked.
“In two days' time, one of my friends' daughter will be having her internship in your company. Make some preparations," Richard instructed.
"Okay. I'll arrange it when I get back," Gerard answered with a nod.
“Okay." After a slight pause, Richard asked, “Do you want to marry Lilah?"
"Yes," Gerard answered with conviction. "She's a girl worth protecting with my Life."
Richard sighed. In a way, he already knew that this was going to be his son's answer. “Alright, alright. After all, you're the one who's going to be living with her. In the future, this family will need your support. By then, you should know what to do."
Gerard nodded. "Okay, Dad. Good night. I'm leaving now."
"Okay." Richard nodded back as he let his son go.
Lilah returned home in the evening. When she saw that Jerrold hadn't come back yet, she called Gerard and asked, "Has Jerrold come back?"
"Not yet," Gerard promptly answered.
"Then I'll call Effie," Lilah said.
At this point, she was getting a Little worried. How could it take so long to go shopping?
