Chapter 38

“Don’t worry,” the leading police officer said. “We won’t falsely accuse people, nor will we let any criminal off. There is other evidence at the police station. We’ll check it as well. If it proves your innocence, we will immediately release you with a certain amount of compensation for mental damage caused.”

“O-other evidence?” A trace of panic flashed across Yolanda’s eyes as she subconsciously asked, “What other evidence is there?”

“It’s not convenient to reveal it to you. You’ll know if you come with us. Please.”

Before confirming that Yolanda was the buyer, the police officer politely gestured for her to follow rather than force her.

Yolanda smiled dryly and said, “Officer, it’s my birthday today. The guests are still here. Can you give me some time? I’ll come later to cooperate with your investigation.”

“I’m sorry, but this is an important case. You should come with us now.” The police officer paused and said, “And we must search your house to collect evidence. Please cooperate.”

“Search the house?” Russell immediately said, “No, there are so many guests here. It’s not that we don’t want to cooperate, but we really can’t.”

Yolanda said directly, “That’s right. You don’t even have concrete evidence. As long as we disagree, you have no right to search our house.”

The police officer looked troubled. The police must have the house owner’s permission before the search. If Russell was unwilling, they had to give up.

At this moment, a woman suddenly ran over from the door. “Officer, I can testify that the buyer was Yolanda.”

The moment Yolanda saw the woman, she was dumbfounded and stood rooted to the ground.

“Y-you…” Yolanda stuttered.

The woman met Yolanda’s gaze and said, “Madam, the police have already come to investigate. Stop denying it. You should turn yourself in at once. Confess so that you may get a lenient sentence.”

Yolanda gritted her teeth so hard. This woman was the servant Yolanda had planted by Maria’s side. ‘How did she come in from the outside?’ Yolanda wondered.

Almost at once, Yolanda recalled that Maria was still healthy and showed no signs of being poisoned. Then, she supposed that Maria had never taken the poison.

“What’s going on?” The police officer frowned and asked the servant, “Who are you?”

The servant introduced herself and then explained in detail how Yolanda had ordered her to mix the poison with Maria’s medicine.

It was a lot to take in and Maria fainted and fell backward.

“Grandma!” Melody was the first to notice Maria’s abnormality. She immediately ran towards Maria.

She was so fast that the others only saw a shadow moving through the crowd.

When they looked again, Melody caught Maria just in time.

“Grandma…” Melody quickly checked Maria’s pulse. After confirming that her coma was due to anxiety, she was about to perform acupuncture on Maria.

However, before Melody could do it, Russell suddenly took a few steps forward and pushed her away.

“Mom, are you alright?” he cried out.

Russell’s face was filled with worry. He shook Maria a few times but she was still unconscious. When he saw the device Melody was holding, he determined that Melody was going to harm Maria.

He glared at Melody and questioned, “What are you trying to do to her? She’s your grandmother. She’s doted on you enough. How can you even harm her? I know you know medicine. You’re deliberately making her sick and taking this opportunity to show your medical skills and stay to treat her, right? Look, I’m no fool!”

Melody frowned and explained, “I didn’t do anything. I was going to perform acupuncture on her.”

To divert the focus, Yolanda quickly said, “Acupuncture? With your acupuncture, I’m afraid she will die at once, right?”

As Yolanda spoke, she snatched the device from Melody’s hand. Then Yolanda raised her voice and said to the guests, “Everyone, look. We don’t usually use such thick and long needles for acupuncture. Obviously, she wants to harm Maria.”

Everyone looked at the device in Yolanda’s hand. The needle was indeed much longer and thicker than the normal type.

Besides, they had already had a bad impression of Melody. As expected, they immediately criticized her.

“Melody, you’ve gone too far. Don’t you think this is too cruel?” one shouted from the crowd.

“Tell us the truth. Did you buy the poison to cause trouble so that you can divert everyone’s attention?” another heckler asked.

Melody glanced at the crowd expressionlessly and said, “I didn’t do anything to harm Grandma.”

“Why should we believe you?” a voice shouted.

Justin took the opportunity to give Melody a hard time. He stepped forward and scolded, “You not only look ugly for a reason but have an ugly and vicious soul!”

Melody narrowed her eyes and raised her hand to slap Justin. A crisp sound rang out, and the entire living room fell silent.

“How dare you hit me?” Justin covered his face in disbelief and rushed to slap Melody back.

However, before his hand could touch Melody, Melody grabbed it hard in midair. The excruciating pain made Justin scream.

“Ouch! It hurts. Let go of me. Officer, save me. She’s going to kill me,” he yelled.

Melody coldly shook off Justin’s hand and said in disgust, “I hit you because you deserve it. Kill you? You don’t want to get my hands dirty for your cheap life.”

“You…” Justin was furious and was about to charge at Melody again.

Seeing things getting more chaotic, the police officers hurriedly went to stop Justin. One of the police officers reminded him, “Saving that old lady’s life is more important. Can anyone here help her? She is still unconscious.”

The others looked at one another. They were all businessmen, so how could they know first aid?

“Me,” Melody said. “I just need to give Grandma acupuncture. She will wake up soon.”

“Then try it first. Let’s call the hospital,” the police officer said.

Melody nodded. Just as she was about to perform it once again on Maria, Russell stopped her.

“Officer, we can’t let her do this. She knows some medical skills, but who knows if she has any ill intentions and wants to take the opportunity to harm my mother? We disowned her. She might hold a grudge against us,” Russell said.

When the police officer hesitated, a guest suddenly thought of something and said, “I know a doctor. He happens to be in a meeting nearby today. I can call him to come and help. No one knows how long we’ll have to wait for the ambulance.”

“Alright.” The police officer immediately nodded. “Hurry and call that doctor.”

Before long, the guest was back with a doctor. Melody recognized the doctor at a glance.
