Chapter 397
Colin Herbert sounded extremely anxious. There was also an impatient voice urging from the other end of the phone line. “Have you decided? Do you want to operate today or next month?”
“Please wait a moment, let me check…” Melody could hear Colin reply to that person humbly before speaking again.
“Melody, do you have time now? Can you come to Central Hospital? We encountered some trouble…”
Melody had already stepped on the accelerator the moment she heard Colin cry for help. As she turned the steering wheel adroitly, she continued, “Which part of the hospital are you in? I’m on my way there now.”
“Operating theater on the 5th floor of the inpatient building,” Colin replied.
“Alright, give me ten minutes.”
The Fox family’s house was at least 20 minutes away from Central Hospital, not including time spent waiting for the green lights along the way.
However, she could sense that the situation on Colin’s side was very urgent.
Hence, she floored the accelerator and kept overtaking along the way. Finally, she reached the 5th floor operating theater after 10 minutes.
Melody was very familiar with this floor. It was the place where she had operated on Ander’s son, Lucas.
As soon as she stepped out of the elevator, she heard Colin apologizing profusely to a doctor. “I’m sorry! Please wait a little longer… just a few more minutes.”
“Do you realize how long I have been waiting? Just because you’re a traditional medicine practitioner doesn’t give you the right to question our modern medicine practices. I’m telling you now. If she doesn’t undergo gastrectomy now, her condition will quickly worsen to the late stage! At that point, even if she undergoes surgery, she won’t be able to survive!”
“I know all of this, and I’m not questioning you. However, your chief physician has said that as long as she undergoes laparoscopic surgery, there’s no need for a total
gastrectomy… Once the entire stomach is removed, her life will definitely be greatly affected in the future,” Colin said desperately.
The doctor answered impatiently, “Just tell me whether you want to proceed with this surgery or not! This place isn’t Herbathrive. This is the Central Hospital! If you have doubts about our advice, then bring her back to your Herbathrive!”
“But…” Colin felt trapped but he still put down the pen in his hand and said, “I can’t sign this carelessly. I need to see your chief physician.”
“Huh?” The doctor’s face clouded over as he said with a derisive laugh, “I get it now. You knew that the chief physician had gone for training today and handed the surgery to a new doctor like me. Therefore, you feel very insecure and are very dissatisfied with me, aren’t you?”
Colin was at a loss for words. “I didn’t mean that at all. It’s just that…”
The doctor simply waved Colin away, “Enough! Since you don’t need my treatment, you guys can be discharged immediately! I’ll go to the office to prepare the documents for your discharge now!”
Colin got a shock and quickly tugged at the other party’s sleeve. “Doctor…”
“Don’t touch me!” The doctor reached out and pushed Colin away.
As Colin had been watching over Beverly for the past two nights, he was already a little tired. The instant he was pushed away, his body promptly lost its balance, sending his head on a collision course with the wall.
The doctor became terrified. He was worried that things might blow up and affect his career.
He tried to catch Colin, but he was too late.
Right at this moment, a dark shadow suddenly flashed in front of the doctor and grabbed Colin in the nick of time.
Colin’s head was less than one inch away from the wall when a hand suddenly yanked his body up.
Colin looked at the owner of the hand in shock. The moment he saw the other party’s face, his eyes lit up. “Melody? You’re here!”
Melody nodded and gave Colin a reassuring look. Then, her icy gaze landed on the doctor’s staff pass.
The staff pass indicated that the other party’s name was Dan Maxwell.
Based on the conversation between Colin and the doctor, it seemed that this doctor had just joined Central Hospital.
“What are you looking at?” Dan noticed Melody’s gaze and covered his staff pass somewhat hurriedly.
Melody shifted her gaze from the staff pass to Dan’s face and said icily, “You are a doctor yet you assaulted the patient’s family member? The tense relationship between doctors and patients nowadays is caused by rats like you!”
“Rat? Who are you calling a rat!” Dan blurted out.
He added angrily, “I didn’t push him in the first place. He yanked me first. Who knows what he will do to me in the next second? I did what I did in self-defense!”
“Self-defense? Hah! I’ve never seen this sort of self-defense! If I hadn’t rushed up in time, he would be bleeding from the head now!”
Dan retorted brazenly, “Isn’t he unharmed? What bleeding are you talking about? On the other hand, I was frightened by you guys just now. I should be asking you guys for compensation for mental trauma. What right do you have to scold me?”
Melody had seen despicable people, but she had never seen someone so despicable. “I should really introduce you to Yolanda Fox. You two will definitely become good friends.”
Puzzled, Dan frowned and asked, “Yolanda Fox? What do you mean?”
“You don’t need to know this. But what you need to know is that although the patient has gastric cancer, the disease is in the early stages. She doesn’t need to undergo a total gastrectomy at all. Yet you insist on doing a total gastrectomy on her. What’s your motive?” Melody questioned.
Dan could not help feeling guilty. He did not dare to look at Melody directly and only said, “What do you outsiders know? If I don’t do a total gastrectomy, she may suffer a relapse. Once that happens, can you bear the consequences? You are just a mere slip of a girl. How dare you question my medical skills!”
“Relapse? What a joke! I think you want to accumulate surgical experience and enrich your resume, am I right? You have probably never performed a total gastrectomy as a chief surgeon. That’s why you need such a patient to be your test subject!” Melody rebutted mercilessly.
“W-What nonsense are you talking about? I’ll sue you for defamation!” Dan’s expression changed immediately.
However, his evasive eyes indicated that there was more to this than meets the eye.
Melody gave a scornful snort. “Hmph! I wasn’t very sure just now that you were doing this for yourself, but now it seems that my suspicions have been confirmed. Am I right, Dan? For your own selfish gain, you treated a patient’s life flippantly. You have no right to be a doctor. You’re not even worthy of being a human!”
Colin became incensed at this point.
He grabbed Dan by the lapels and lashed out, “Are you even human? To think that I thought you got the wrong medical file, or that Beverly’s condition had worsened to the point where she really needed a total gastrectomy… Who would have thought that you were doing all this for some useless surgical experience! I’ll kill you!”
Colin cared about his wife the most in his life. Now that Beverly was almost treated as a test subject by Dan, he was so furious that his entire face became downright menacing.
He freed one hand, clenched his fist, and was about to punch Dan in the face…
“Argh…” Dan was so scared that he closed his eyes.
Just as the fist was about to land on Dan’s face…
