Chapter 534
Melody was indeed surprised to discover that the doctor Albert had invited was none other than Cason. But her surprise quickly faded as she reasoned it out.
Cason was known for being greedy. The Nathan family couldn’t compare to the Swanson family, and their company was on the verge of being acquired by the Swanson Group. However, A wealthy family in decline was still valuable enough to be a lucrative opportunity in Cason’s eyes.
The servant glanced at Melody awkwardly before finally knocking on the door. “Mr. Albert, Mr. Nathan, Dr. Knowles has arrived.”
The grumbling inside the room immediately ceased, and Albert’s displeased voice came through. “Let her in!”
The servant quickly opened the door, let Melody enter, and hurriedly left. It was best to get out of such an awkward situation when the person being badmouthed had overheard it.
However, Melody showed no sign of discomfort. She walked in with poise and confidence.
The room was a suite, clearly designed for a young girl. The bedroom door was tightly shut, leaving Melody unsure of the condition of Owen’s daughter.
Albert was already seated on the sofa, his posture rigid, his gaze scrutinizing as he looked Melody up and down.
Cason was surprised to see her. He did not expect to run into her again.
Owen broke the silence. “Dr. Knowles, you’re here. Let me introduce you.
This is my father. The other gentleman is the doctor my father invited.”
Cason lifted his chin, his expression full of disdain. “I never expected someone with such a foul mouth could be a doctor!”
Owen was taken aback and asked in confusion, “Dr. Baxter, what do you mean? Do you know Miss Knowles?”
Cason snapped, “Know her? Hardly! We just met at the door. This rude young lady started yelling at me without reason. She said I wasn’t fit to be human! She had humiliated me! Mr. Nathan, your choice of people is rather disappointing!”
“This…” Owen felt caught in a difficult situation.
Though his interactions with Wilona had been limited, her manner of speaking had convinced him that she wouldn’t insult others without cause.
Forcing a smile, Owen said, “Dr. Baxter, I believe there must be some misunderstanding between you two.”
Cason retorted, “Misunderstanding? Nonsense! If you don’t believe me, ask her if she had insulted me just now!”
Owen hesitated and looked at Melody. “Dr. Knowles?”
Melody didn’t deny it. She replied with a blank expression, “I did insult him. And if hitting someone wasn’t illegal, I would’ve given him a beating as well.”
“You!” Cason was so enraged that he nearly lost his composure. But when he thought about the generous fee offered by the Nathan family, he managed to restrain himself. He turned to Albert and said, “Mr. Albert, did you invite me here just so this young girl could humiliate me?”
“Of course not!” Albert, who had great respect for Cason, hurriedly stood up from the sofa. “Dr. Baxter, please calm down. I’ll have her leave right now. And to express my gratitude, I hope you won’t mind accepting this.”
As Albert spoke, he took off the pocket watch he had been wearing and offered it to Cason.
Cason inspected the pocket watch in his hand. “A pocket watch? An antique?”
Albert smiled. “Calling it an antique is just a way to make it sound more valuable. It’s just a trinket. Please accept it.”
A flash of greed crossed Cason’s eyes, though he quickly masked it, putting on an air of reluctant acceptance. “Since it’s a token of your appreciation, I’ll accept it. But I don’t want to see this woman here anymore!”
“Dr. Baxter, please calm down,” Albert said. His face turned stern as he turned to Melody. “Dr. Knowles, I believe you know the way out. I won’t need to ‘invite’ you to leave, will I?”
The emphasis on the word “invite” made it clear that if Melody didn’t leave on her own, Albert would have her thrown out.
“Dad…” Owen wanted to defend Melody, but he was silenced by a sharp glare from his father.
Melody remained calm, speaking with measured confidence. “Mr. Albert, I’m here to treat your granddaughter, not to engage in arguments. If you want to cure her, I suggest you take back what you just said.”
Albert wasn’t an unreasonable man, but he had great faith in Cason’s ability to heal his beloved granddaughter.
Now, hearing Melody’s words, doubt began to creep into his mind.
Owen had spoken highly of Wilona multiple times, indicating she must have impressive medical skills. The more doctors looking at Shindy, the better the chances of curing her.
“…
“Albert hesitated, but Cason quickly interjected, his tone dripping with disdain.
“What a joke! Are you implying you can cure Miss Nathan? How long have you been practicing medicine? Oh wait, have you been out of medical school for two years? Just because you know some tricks doesn’t make you a miracle worker! Young people shouldn’t be so arrogant!”
Cason’s reminder brought Albert back to his senses. He thought, ‘This so-called Dr. Knowles is so young. How can her medical skills compare to Cason’s?’ Offending a renowned doctor like Cason for someone so inexperienced wasn’t worth the risk.
With this thought, Albert made up his mind. “Dr. Knowles, we don’t require your services here. Please leave immediately. Don’t worry. We’ll pay you exactly what was promised. Owen, how much did she ask for? Pay her now, and take her out.”
Owen responded awkwardly, “Dad, Miss Knowles didn’t ask for money. She only requested that I agree to one thing.”
“What thing?”
“I’m not sure. She said she’d let me know after she cured Shindy.”
Cason chimed in, “Mr. Nathan, you’re being naive! She might request your entire family’s wealth!”
Owen’s disdain for Cason was growing. Frowning, he replied, “If it could cure my daughter, I’m willing to lose everything.”
“You…” Cason was at a loss for words, his indignation growing. He shot a glance at Albert, signaling him to kick Melody out immediately.
Albert’s face hardened as he declared, “Dr. Knowles, I will say this one last time. Leave now!”
Owen clenched his fists. “Dad! You brought in Dr. Baxter unexpectedly, but I had already asked Dr. Knowles to see Shindy. She hasn’t complained about us bringing in another doctor, and I already feel bad about it. Why do you still insist on driving her away?”
“Enough! How old is she? How could her medical skills possibly compare to Dr. Baxter’s? Take her out now. Don’t make me do it myself!”
“Dad, you…”
“Mr. Nathan.” Melody interrupted calmly. “Since Dr. Baxter doesn’t want me here, I’ll leave for now. If he fails to cure Miss Nathan, I’ll return when needed.”
She wasn’t in a hurry. Given the situation with Cason, the Nathan family would only owe her more, and she could afford to wait.
However, just as Melody turned to leave, she noticed a familiar figure standing at the door.
