Chapter 610
Charlotte’s words were driven by multiple motives. First, she genuinely did not trust Melody and was repulsed by her arrogant demeanor.
Second, she wanted to impress Oliver. Knowing Oliver as she did, she was certain he would never allow Central Hospital to interfere in their matters.
Third, she considered that Oliver cared deeply about Miranda. If she were to die, he would lose the person he valued most, making Charlotte the person he would care about most.
“Grandpa, you really can’t trust this woman. You can’t leave Grandma’s fate in the hands of this murderer.” Charlotte’s relentless persuasion caused Oliver’s wavering resolve to solidify once again.
“We don’t need Central Hospital’s involvement in our affairs,” Oliver said, urging the head nurse to call the police immediately.
Rodney was furious. He stepped forward to argue with Charlotte and Oliver. “Stop making baseless accusations. Miss Fox did nothing but try to help. How can you call her a murderer? We could sue you for defamation.”
“Go ahead and sue,” Charlotte retorted provocatively. “Before you file a lawsuit, ask Miss Fox if she dares to sue us for defamation.”
Rodney found himself at a loss for words against Charlotte’s shamelessness. Frustrated, he turned to Melody. “Miss Fox, well…”
Just as Melody was about to respond, two figures appeared suddenly at the door.
“Dad!”
“Grandpa!”
The elderly man and the young girl spoke almost simultaneously.
Seeing the newcomers, Oliver furrowed his brow. “Mia isn’t well yet. Why did you bring her here?”
The woman holding the little girl shook her head. “I heard about Mom’s situation and rushed over to see her. Dad, what happened to Mom? Isn’t the surgery still pending?”
“She’s been poisoned,” he replied.
“Why did this happen?” The woman’s face instantly turned ashen.
Charlotte sneered and spat. “Hypocrites.”
The woman frowned and looked at Charlotte. “Charlotte, what do you mean by that?”
“What do I mean? Don’t you get it? You insisted on marrying into a poor, remote place. Now that you can’t stand the hard life there, you come running back to grab a share of the family assets, right?” she mocked.
“You…” The woman’s face darkened with anger.
Oliver’s voice was cold as he reprimanded, “Charlotte, be quiet.”
Charlotte was deeply unwilling but, under Oliver’s pressure, had no choice but to remain silent.
The woman was about to inquire about Miranda’s condition when she caught sight of Melody out of the corner of her eye. “It’s you?”
Melody looked puzzled, as she didn’t seem to recognize the serene-looking mother and daughter in front of her.
Oliver also asked in confusion, “Do you know her?”
The woman nodded, looking at Melody with some excitement. “When I returned to Silverlake that day, Mia had a sudden emergency. I had no money and no one around to help us. But I happened to run into this young lady, who helped us, saved Mia, and even arranged for me to get free medicine at Herbathrive…”
Oliver was stunned, and his gaze toward Melody grew complex.
At that moment, Melody remembered who the mother and daughter were.
The day she went to check on Owen’s daughter, she coincidentally encountered this mother and daughter at the Nathan family’s doorstep.
Now, dressed in clean clothes and no longer looking pale and thin, they were hard to recognize at first glance. Melody hadn’t realized them.
And she didn’t expect them to be Oliver’s daughter and granddaughter.
No wonder David had mentioned that no mother and daughter had come to get medicine later.
Oliver’s daughter and granddaughter wouldn’t come to Herbathrive for medicine once they found Oliver.
“So it’s you,” Melody said, reverting to her professional habit. “Is her illness not fully cured yet?”
“Yes…” The woman was about to continue when she suddenly remembered her mother was still in critical condition. She stopped and turned to Oliver. “Dad, this young lady is very skilled. Why don’t you let her try to help Mom with the detoxification?”
She had overheard some of the conversation in the hallway earlier.
There was no way she could believe that Melody was a murderer.
Someone who could offer help to strangers couldn’t possibly be such an evil person.
With the support of the mother and daughter, Melody took the opportunity to speak. “Mr. Wallrich, all your doctors are here. Even if I wanted to harm your wife, I wouldn’t have the chance. Are you really going to watch her die and let the real culprit go free?”
Perhaps Melody’s earnest gaze, combined with his daughter’s words, finally swayed Oliver once more.
The doctors, anxious, urged him to let Melody try. “Mr. Wallrich, we are all here watching. Just let her give it a try,” they said.
Oliver clenched his teeth, his personal grudges momentarily forgotten as he felt the urgency of the situation.
With a complicated expression, he said, “Fine, you can try. But if anything happens to my wife, regardless of whether you are the poisoner or not, you will be held primarily responsible.”
“Agreed,” Melody said without hesitation, then moved towards the bedside.
Her decisiveness surprised Oliver even more.
Charlotte, however, was panicking. “Grandpa, why are you really letting her…”
“Be quiet,” Oliver snapped, delivering another hard slap to Charlotte’s face.
“Grandpa?” Charlotte’s eyes filled with tears from the pain.
Oliver showed no sympathy on his face. Coldly, he exposed Charlotte’s true nature. “Don’t think I don’t know what you’re plotting. Regardless of whether your grandmother can be saved, the Wallrich family will have nothing to do with you from now on.”
Charlotte’s eyes widened in shock.
Oliver’s words were like a death sentence to her.
Her legs gave way, and she collapsed onto the floor. ‘What should I do?’ she wondered.
Her only hope now rested on whether Melody could save her grandmother. She would beg her grandmother for help if she succeeded.
Charlotte who had hoped for Miranda to die quickly now desperately wished for her to recover.
At the bedside, Melody took Miranda’s hand and carefully checked on her condition.
After about half a minute, she released the hand and turned to Oliver. “It’s indeed poisoning. The poison is called…”
“Why are you here?” Before Melody could finish, a sharp female voice interrupted.
Melody instinctively looked toward the source of the voice.
Her gaze met Regina’s.
Regina had been hiding well but feared that First Hospital personnel might find her, so she decided to sneak out to the parking lot and leave.
She didn’t expect to run into those searching for her in the parking lot and was forced to return to the ward.
To her dismay, Melody, whom she despised, was now in the room.
Panicking and disgusted, Regina said to Oliver, “Mr. Wallrich, this woman is no good. You need to get her out of here immediately.”
Regina knew Melody’s identity and feared that Melody might expose her for impersonating someone else.
Knowing that Melody’s medical skills could potentially counteract the poison, Regina couldn’t allow Melody to stay for any reason.
