She began targeting and hurting him, using it as her ticket into those so–called upper–class circles, cozying up to those rich heirs and heiresses.
She knew Justin had always been cold and distant–too exceptional, too good–looking–which had made plenty of rich kids dislike him. So she kept stepping on him, over and over, desperate to force her way into those circles.
Her nails dug so hard into her palm that they broke the skin. Danielle had never hated the person she used to be as much as she did now.
She and Justin could have protected each other while growing up. They could have comforted each other’s pain, supported each other, and gotten through it together. But her vanity had ruined all of it, bit by bit.
She couldn’t understand how they had… ended up like this.
She truly hated herself.
She even felt that no matter how Justin chose to take revenge on her now, she deserved every bit of it.
Just then, the bedroom door opened. Susan walked in with a smug expression, and Justin came in right behind her, cold and unreadable.
Danielle was prepared for this. She had hit Susan earlier. Justin had to be here to confront her over it.
She decided no matter how Justin humiliated her, she would accept it.
“Justin, Danielle probably didn’t mean to hit me. She’s probably just too used to throwing her weight around.” Susan deliberately brought up the slap. She clearly wanted Justin to get the message. Teach Danielle a lesson for me.
“As long as she’s willing to apologize to me, I won’t hold it against her.”
Danielle lowered her head. Her throat felt dry and itchy.
The old Danielle would never have apologized.
Back in high school, Danielle had deliberately told the driver not to pick Justin after school, even though they got out at the same time.
Justin had ended up walking all the way back to the hilltop estate alone, not getting home until the middle of the night.
Jeremy had been furious and ordered Danielle to apologize to Justin, but she had refused proudly.
“I…” Even though it was clearly not Danielle’s fault this time, she still planned to apologize first.
“Yeah, she was spoiled rotten by the Bartons. She’s always been arrogant. That’s just the way she is, and she won’t change. Stay out of her way from now on.” Before Danielle could force out the words “I’m sorry,” Justin spoke first.
Every word sounded like he was tearing Danielle down, yet somehow, he had also protected the last bit of her dignity.
Susan stared at Justin in disbelief. She felt wronged, but for a moment, she couldn’t think of what to say, if she said too much, then she would be the one acting arrogant instead…

“Get up and eat. If you starve to death, I won’t be able to explain it to Grandpa.” Justin tapped the table. The rosary beads in his hand looked so cold that Danielle didn’t even dare raise her eyes to meet his.
He turned and walked out, and Susan let out a mocking laugh and followed after him.
It took Danielle a long time to calm herself down. Then her tears finally spilled over, completely beyond control.
She had no idea what she could even say. Even if she told Justin she regretted it, that she never should have treated him that way before, it would mean nothing to Justin now.
The dining room.
By the time Danielle came out, Justin and Susan were already eating breakfast. They hadn’t waited for her.
Danielle had never expected Justin to wait and eat with her anyway.
