If she hadn’t gone back to the Bartons with Chandler back then, and had instead grown up on her own in the slums, she might have been living this kind of life all along–ordinary, repetitive, almost mechanical on the surface, yet steady and quietly content.
At the supermarket, Danielle picked out things that were practical and affordable. After hesitating for a long time, she finally used the card Justin had given her.
She took a photo of the receipt and sent it to Justin.
“I’ll keep track of every expense and pay you back after I get my salary.”
Danielle had already made up her mind. After she received her first paycheck, she would return the card to Justin, along with everything she had spent this month.
The amount meant nothing to Justin, but she didn’t want to owe him anymore.
“We’ve got all of that at home. Peggy will get everything ready for you.” Justin had clearly looked at what Danielle bought. Things like toilet paper, sanitary pads, a toothbrush, toothpaste, underwear.
Peggy would prepare those for me.
Danielle froze for a moment, her ears burning red with embarrassment. She had only been thinking about showing Justin the total, and hadn’t realized that most of what she bought were personal items.
She quickly deleted the photo, wishing she could just disappear into a hole.
She typed and deleted several times before finally lowering her head and typing, feeling helpless. “I’m going to stay at the apartment for a while. Sorry for the trouble during this time.”
Justin didn’t reply for a long time. Danielle felt a little disappointed. Carrying bags full of daily supplies and groceries, she struggled to make her way out on her own.
Just as she stepped out of the supermarket, her phone rang.
“Stay where you are. I’m on the way.”
Danielle froze, then looked around at the entrance of the supermarket. He’s on the way?
The receipt she had sent Justin had the supermarket’s name on it. He must have seen it.
After about ten minutes, Justin’s driver pulled up by the curb. Inside the black luxury car, Justin’s sharp, flawless profile looked even more striking. The window was half lowered. He didn’t even look at Danielle as he spoke coldly. “Get in.”
Danielle didn’t dare argue. She carried her things over with difficulty. “No need to trouble yourself. I can take Line five straight to the apartment. It’s very convenient.”
Only then did Justin look at her properly, his gaze sweeping over her from head to toe. His tone was cold and without warmth. “Trying to make me feel guilty?”

Danielle paused awkwardly. Sure enough, once someone had done something wrong, everything they did afterward would be questioned.
“No… it’s just not convenient staying at your place. The apartment Adriana arranged for me is good enough.”
Justin frowned, clearly losing patience. “You helped Adriana persuade He Jianlin. Do you really think Chandler will let you off that easily? The only way you stay safe now is to convince them you still have some value.”
Justin was right. Only by staying close to him would Chandler and Mister think twice about her, would they consider whether she still had value in the future.
Danielle stood there awkwardly, but she really didn’t want to see Susan’s face again.
“It’s fine. If I die, then so be it.” Danielle said it like it didn’t matter.
A vein throbbed at Justin’s temple. He was clearly holding back his anger. His slender fingers tightened around the rosary in his hand as he spoke through clenched teeth. “Get in the car!”
Danielle was startled by the look in his eyes. She obediently put her things in the trunk and got in.
Afraid he’d be disgusted by her, she pressed herself as close to the door as possible, stared out the window, and stayed silent.
Justin glanced at Danielle several times. Had she really changed?
