In an instant, hatred flashed in Johanna’s eyes. The thought of Archie’s body lost to the sea, torn apart, ignited a fury she could barely contain. She yearned to capture the mastermind and exact retribution. Trembling with anger, her eyes bloodshot, tears welled and fell.
“Archie…”
Archie wasn’t her biological brother. They had met in an orphanage, both parentless, sharing the same misery and suffering together. When they were thirteen, he planned his escape, and she clung to his sleeve, begging to come along. He agreed. From then on, they became siblings by choice, relying on each other for survival. Archie gave her the name Johanna Rosario. “Your name is Johanna Rosario,” he’d said. “You don’t know your last name, so I’ll give you mine. From now on, I’ll be your brother, and you can rely on me.”
They endured hardships; sleeping on the streets, rummaging through trash bins. She created distractions while he stole to survive. Luck didn't always favor them; sometimes they were caught and beaten badly. Even then, Archie would drag her away, a bruised face revealing a hidden croissant. “Look,” he'd proudly say, “I still have one!”
Later, Archie joined the Russell family, becoming a subordinate to Stephan. But among many subordinates, Archie remained ordinary, never standing out. Then, he saved Imogen from drowning, catching her eye. With her help, he gained recognition, becoming one of Stephan’s trusted subordinates. Had he not been ambushed and lost at sea, he would have become the Russell family’s son-in-law.
Johanna wiped away her tears, refocusing on the papers before her. After the initial shock and anger, confusion set in. Why? Had Stephan discovered who was responsible for Archie’s death? Why did he do nothing, even destroying clues? Did he not want revenge? Did he not want to retrieve what was lost? Did he destroy the evidence to keep it secret? Or did he have other plans?
After a few moments of reflection, she calmed down and called Imogen, hoping to glean more information. Based on Imogen’s deep feelings for Archie, Johanna knew Imogen would care. If she knew of a lead, she wouldn't remain indifferent.
The phone was answered quickly. Johanna forced a smile, her voice sweet. “Imogen, did you miss me?”
“Yes, of course. I’ve been so used to having you by my side. It feels strange without you.” Imogen’s voice was gentle.
Even over the phone, Johanna imagined Imogen’s smile, her hand resting on her belly, radiating maternal warmth.
“Imogen, I miss you too. I’d rather take care of you myself. I don’t trust anyone else.” Johanna spoke in a lively tone, but her face remained unmoved, even cold. Imogen, sadly, couldn't perceive this. “Is there any progress?” Imogen asked.
“Doesn’t seem like it; Stephan is busy every day, and I barely get a chance to see him…” Johanna feigned frustration, sighing. Imogen could only offer comfort.
After the call, Johanna confirmed Imogen knew nothing. Stephan had suppressed the information, keeping everyone silent, preventing any leaks.
