"Charlotte, you..." Andrew started, his chin tilted up like he was ready to argue.
But the moment he looked up, he found Anthony staring at him with eyes as cold as ice.
"Is there a problem?" Anthony asked, his left arm resting on the back of Charlotte's chair, the protective gesture impossible to miss. His words came out sharp and cold, and with that intense look, Andrew felt a chill run down his spine. He rushed to explain, "No, nothing. I think Charlotte's got a point!"
Whatever comeback he'd been planning got swallowed right then and there.
Charlotte just leaned into Anthony, a quiet smile playing on her lips.
Everyone in the room knew exactly what had just happened. No one said a word about it, but it was crystal clear. The only one who seemed oblivious was Shirley, who was completely focused on Kenneth.
Andrew still looked annoyed. He almost said something a few times, but each time, he thought better of it and kept his mouth shut. Honestly, Charlotte wasn't the only one who wanted to shut him up. Shirley probably did too.
The concert went on for four hours. Since Charlotte was pregnant, Anthony refused to let her sit that long. He took her out for some fresh air during the break, and they grabbed a late-night bite. Charlotte had always loved sweets, but lately her cravings had shifted. Now she wanted everything sweet and sour.
The concert finally wrapped up. Kenneth said goodbye to the fans, then hurried backstage.
He was wearing a denim jacket covered in rhinestones, his hair a bit messy, and just a hint of smoky eye makeup. It only made him look even more handsome.
"Lottie..." Kenneth spotted Charlotte on the couch and sped up, grinning from ear to ear. "Well? Did I do justice to all your hard work?"
"Not bad," Charlotte replied, pushing aside the tart fruit she'd been snacking on and flashing a lazy, satisfied smile.
Kenneth had the voice and the stage presence. No matter what song he performed, he owned it.
"Did you end up throwing up?" Kenneth grinned, glancing at her stomach, clearly still thinking about how she'd turned up her nose at him that morning.
Charlotte leaned back, resting a hand on her belly. "Not yet," she said with a shrug. "But if you keep trying to recruit them, I can't promise that won't change."
Kenneth laughed, not even trying to hide his excitement. "You have no idea how popular these two are going to be. If I don't make my move now, someone else will steal them away."
They weren't even born yet and already had a lineup of career options waiting for them. Kenneth knew he couldn't outmaneuver Donald, and Roger was tough competition too. His only chance was to get in early.
With a mom like Charlotte, at least one of these kids had to be born with musical talent, right?
"Deal," Kenneth said, making the decision on his own. He pulled out his phone, handed it to Anthony, and got serious. "Anthony, take our picture."
He was determined to be the first uncle with a photo of his niece and nephew.
"Sure," Anthony said, taking the phone and opening the camera app. He stepped back, bent down a little, and carefully lined up the shot.
"Ready? One, two..."
"Take a bunch! I want to pick the best ones to frame," Kenneth insisted, standing next to Charlotte and pointing at her belly with a grin that said he had already claimed them for himself.
The camera clicked over and over. Anthony took a dozen photos at least, and just then he noticed Charlotte's face twist into a tired little frown.
