Rosanna had never been able to stomach Elsa’s forceful personality. The woman always pushed her own agenda, demanding that others fall in line unreasonably.

Yet this time, Elsa’s reasoning struck closer to the truth than Rosanna cared to admit, leaving her torn as her gaze drifted between Emmett and Shari. She had considered asking Emmett to retire earlier than planned and for Shari to do the same, so they could both help her care for her daughter.

But the words never left her lips. Even she knew it was unreasonable to ask them to abandon their careers for her sake.

Still, she simply didn’t want Elsa to be the one looking after her child.

Emmett studied Elsa for a long moment before speaking at last. “If you want to care for our granddaughter, then do it. Shari and I both have our work. Shari still has room to grow in her career, and I don’t plan to retire yet. My position won’t rise much higher, but I want to keep working for a few more years. And Ethan’s girlfriend is doing design work for the military. I can make sure no one takes advantage of her.”

Rosanna felt a wave of disappointment, suppressing the thoughts she had been ready to voice.

There was no question that her in-laws loved her daughter, but they were clearly unwilling to give up their work just to take care of the child.

Kenny’s heart ached as he looked at his wife. He knew how badly she wanted a solution, but he couldn’t ask her to give up her wings, nor could he demand his father and stepmother retire early for their sake.

It appeared they had little option but to agree to Elsa’s proposal to care for their child.

“Rosanna,” Kenny said gently, “maybe we should let my mom take over. She does seem to care for our daughter.”

Rosanna’s lips pressed into a thin line. She didn’t answer, but it was clear she didn’t agree.

Elsa watched the scene in silence. She had already guessed Rosanna’s reluctance. Otherwise, Emmett wouldn’t have said that earlier.

Elsa gave a sharp, dismissive snort. “Think carefully, both of you. Emmett and his new wife are not stepping up to care for your child. If you don’t want me, then fine; you can solve the problem yourselves.”

Rosanna’s chest tightened. She felt like she was in a dilemma.

After a long pause, she forced the words out, her voice low. “I’m sorry, Elsa. I’ll leave Emmie in your care. I don’t feel safe handing her to anyone else.”

Kenny caught the flicker of resignation in his wife’s eyes. He realized she had made a compromise. He gave her hand a light squeeze and spoke up. “Then let’s do that. Dad, Shari, I won’t pressure you. You both have your own careers, and I understand that.”

Elsa’s lips curled into a blunt, cutting smile. “You see, Kenny? At the end of the day, it’s I who will help you. You can’t rely on your father; he puts his career first, and his new wife’s comfort comes right after. Who knows, maybe she’s already expecting. They might be busy caring for their own child soon. How would they possibly care for yours?”
