When Lemira Langston saw Rowan Langston step out of the room, her heart leapt into her throat once again.

She had no idea what kind of answer he was about to deliver.

Almost everyone immediately turned their eyes to him.

But Rowan only looked at Lemira, his tone surprisingly gentle. "I finished the examination. We found a slight issue."

Lemira frowned. "What kind of slight issue?"

Thaddeus Draven chimed in, "Whatever equipment or resources you need, just name it."

Rowan cast a sideways glance at Orion Everhart. "Mrs. Amanda isn't suffering from a severe natural illness. She was poisoned."

"Poisoned?"

Lemira was stunned. That kind of dramatic sabotage sounded like a plotline from a vintage soap opera, not something that happened in modern daily life.

She had assumed Amanda had contracted some sort of acute disease; she never expected foul play.

For some reason, the very first suspects that popped into Lemira's mind were the Sinclair family.

After all, the Sinclairs had ruthlessly used the organ donor match as leverage to threaten Amanda just recently.

Rowan continued, "Yes. Aconite-X Toxin is extremely specialized. It's virtually undetectable in standard post-incident toxicology screenings. It only manifests as severe organ failure, with the kidneys taking the brunt of the damage."

Orion stared at Rowan with ice-cold eyes. "If it's normally undetectable, how did you find it?"

Lemira had the exact same question.

Amanda was staying in the Everhart family's private hospital, surrounded by an elite, top-tier medical team. It seemed impossible that they wouldn't have noticed something so critical.

Rowan answered with calm composure, "That is something the Everhart family needs to investigate internally. While this toxin is designed to evade detection, it isn't entirely invisible if you know what to look for."

Lemira spoke up. "Are you implying there's a problem within the hospital staff? But this is the Everharts' private facility."

"Human loyalty is the most fickle thing in the world. Nothing stays the same forever." Rowan's tone softened noticeably whenever he addressed Lemira.

Yet, she couldn't shake the feeling that his words held a hidden double meaning meant for her.

Was he trying to hint that the Langstons could change too? That they weren't the same terrible people they used to be?

Lemira pretended not to catch the underlying implication. She turned her head toward Orion. "I think every doctor and nurse involved in Amanda's treatment needs to be thoroughly investigated. And considering how close Mrs. Amelia was with her, she had the perfect opportunity to slip it to her."

Judging by the outcome, the Sinclair family had the most to gain.

It didn't take a genius to realize the Sinclairs were the prime suspects.

Orion's face was a mask of cold fury. He immediately summoned Director Harrison. "Compile a list of every doctor and purse who handled my mother's medical exams want each and every one of them interrogated and investigated."

Director Harrison looked deeply ashamed. "I will get to the bottom of this immediately."

He couldn't believe someone had the audacity to target Amanda inside his own hospital. Whoever it was had a death wish.

Harrison stormed off aggressively with his security personnel in tow.

Lemira looked back at Orion. "Aside from finding the corrupt medical

staff who gave her the misdiagnosis, you need to figure out exactly how

the poison was administered. You should sweep your own estate as weff."

BUMS

Tampering with Amanda's health so intimately was something only Amelia could have pulled off.

After all, Amanda would never have guarded herself against her supposed best friend. Whether in her food or her drinks, the opportunities were endless.

Orion's complexion turned ashen, a storm of violent hostility swirling in his eyes. But catching sight of Lemira standing there, he quickly forced his temper down.

He turned away to make a phone call.

Lemira stared at his broad back, a complicated mess of emotions making it impossible for her to say anything comforting.

Who the hell could have predicted that Amanda's kidney failure was actually an orchestrated assassination attempt?

Thaddeus ground his teeth in pure rage. "The Sinclair family is absolute scum. Amanda treated them incredibly well over the years, and this is how those ungrateful bastards repay her."
