Maxwell froze, his eyes fixed on the dagger he'd dropped on the floor. The sight of it sent a chill down his spine.
Thank God, he could still be saved.
Sometimes, a person just has a sudden epiphany. Tonight, Natalie had given him that wake-up call.
"I'm sorry," he muttered, then picked up the dagger and left the villa.
Downstairs, Luna had been following Maxwell. After confirming he was gone, she sent Tyler to keep an eye on him before heading back up to check on Natalie.
She pushed the door open. "Natalie, are you okay?"
Natalie shook her head. "I'm fine. I managed to get through to him. I saved his life, and he saved mine."
Luna was furious. "Natalie, you're too kind. A guy like that doesn't deserve a second chance. We should have called the police and had him arrested. Attempted murder would have put him away for years."
Natalie smiled, a knowing look in her eyes. "Luna, sometimes you have to be a little kind. He was just being used by Joanna. She wants to kill, I want to save. Maybe by changing our respective roles, I can change my own fate in this life."
Thinking this, Natalie felt a wave of relief wash over her.
Luna was speechless. What was her sister talking about?
"Well, Natalie, you should get some rest. You have to be up early for the company tomorrow. I've already arranged for someone to take Mr. Hayes and his team to the lab. Herbert will have everything ready and will explain the project plans to them."
"He was so happy, by the way. That project has been on hold for years, and he was always complaining about you for it."
Natalie gave a wry smile. "The three years I took off weren't for nothing, you know."
Lying down, Natalie added, "Luna, you should get some sleep too."
Luna beamed, relieved that the Maxwell situation was finally resolved. "Okay, goodnight, Natalie!"
"Yeah," Natalie replied. "Remember to close the door for me."
Once Luna left, Natalie finally closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.
A lot happened that night.
Joanna had a night full of dreams.
Maxwell didn't sleep a wink, kneeling at the gate of the Spencer family estate.
When Marshall woke up early to go see Natalie, he was startled to find Maxwell kneeling outside his door.
A layer of snow covered his
shoulders, and his hair and

eyelashes were crusted with ice His face was blue with cold.
"Maxwell, are you insane? Kneeling out here this early? The holidays are
don't
just around the corner, ande
want to be planning your funeral."
Only after leaving Mr. Wilson's hospital room did Maxwell realize just how terrifying
a woman Joanna was.
She had gotten both of his sons sent to prison, and the Wilson family empire had changed hands overnight.
"Cousin... Marshall, I was wrong. I was so wrong. I see things clearly now. I never go against you again. I'll work with you to run the any properly."

Maxwell was so cold he could barely speak.
Marshall frowned at the sight of him, looking like he was about to freeze to death. "Get inside. Come in and talk."
Maxwell had to crawl through the doorway, his legs having given out completely. Marshall was stunned.
He never thought he'd live to see the day Maxwell would crawl into his home.
The Spencer matriarch, sitting in the living room, was shocked by the scene.
"My goodness! You spoiled brat, what terrible crime did you commit that has you crawling in here like this?"
Maxwell managed a weak smile. The warmth of the room was a welcome relief.
"Grandma, I'm sorry. I was so immature before, always fighting with my cousin. I won't do it anymore."
