Look at this mess-how could anyone possibly leave now? Tegan was in no mood to give in, set on putting as much distance as possible between herself and Uriah. To make things worse, Leslie hadn't come for anything but trouble, yet somehow Uriah was still blaming Tegan for being difficult. By the look of things, this standoff wasn't ending anytime soon; they'd be lucky to resolve it in less than two weeks. And that meant Miriam's wedding tomorrow was about to go up in smoke.
Miriam was fuming. This was her childhood sweetheart-her one true love! Uriah's gaze hardened. "Miriam!"
The tension in the car became palpable, the air turning distinctly cold.
Miriam snapped, "I'm getting married tomorrow, so forgive me if I'm short-tempered. Maybe you can stay and figure out how to patch things up between your sister and your future wife yourself?" She shot him a glare. “I genuinely need to get home for my wedding!"
She'd been half-asleep since they'd left. When she got that phone call, she'd only been told to come to the office-no one had said anything about being whisked off to Yoreland. Only now did the truth finally hit her: she never should have gotten on that plane with Uriah.
Uriah let out a cold laugh. "You think you're getting married tomorrow?"
"I am," Miriam said firmly, giving him a crisp nod.
His lip curled. "You really think that wedding's still on?"
Miriam gaped at him. Was he serious?
With a sharp click, she threw open the car door and stepped out.
Helena's heart skipped a beat as she watched through wide eyes. "Miriam, what are you doing?" When Leslie had called, she'd been adamant: Miriam had to come, or there'd be no way to resolve the issue quickly. That had said everything Helena needed to know about Miriam's standing at the Horner Group-Leslie never vouched for anyone lightly, and barely a handful ever had her approval. Miriam was one of them. So what on earth did she mean by walking out now?
Miriam faced Uriah squarely. "Sorry, boss, but I'm not the kind of woman who needs some grand career achievement."
"And anyway, my fiancé's loaded. Once we're married, I plan to start a family right away. So how about I just quit now and go get married?"
Uriah looked as if he'd been slapped.
Helena's mouth fell open. "Excuse me? You're quitting now-just to go get married?" Was this a joke? However urgent her wedding, she was already here. Wouldn't it make sense to help Leslie first? ButMiriam just stood there, bold and unyielding, and Helena found herself thinking She had never seen anyone with so little professional commitment in her life.
Uriah narrowed his eyes further. "Your fiancé's rich, is he?”
"Look, that's none of your business. But I need to get home for my wedding. If you're not letting me go then fine I'll just stop showing up. A few days AWOL and I'll be officially fired, right?" She shrugged. It didn't matter to her anymore. If She'd
known this trip to Yorefand was for Uriah's private drama instead of an actual work project, she'd never have come. How many tantrums had he thrown over those two? Honestly, working for a boss who couldn't set boundaries between his private life and his job was enough to send anyone's blood pressure through the roof.
Uriah said nothing.
"Goodbye, boss!" Miriam called, giving him a cheery wave. She slammed the door behind her with a satisfying thud. In her tailored dress and high heels, she strode off with an air of purpose and finality.
Uriah sat in stunned silence.
Helena stared after Miriam, then rounded on Uriah. "So... you're just letting her walk away?"
Uriah seemed dangerously close to blowing a gasket from sheer frustration.
Even the driver was shocked. He'd
never seen Miriam act with such bravado. Maybe she'd finally paid off her student loans? No, wait-she'd said her fiance had money. 4 seen plenty of bosses leave
assistants stranded, but an

Tegan and Finley walked out of the operating room together. Tegan turned to him. “Thanks for your help in there."
The surgery had been challenging—even with their plan in place, Tegan hadn't felt certain she could pull it off. But with Finley's steady hand, everything had gone smoothly.
Finley grinned. "Then why don't you buy me dinner?"
"Wait, what?" Tegan blinked in surprise.
He shrugged. “Or I could take you out instead. Your choice."
Tegan was at a complete loss for words.
