"You were his assistant. Is this how you help me?"
"Not anymore," Miriam said. "I quit yesterday!"
Tegan paused.
No wonder!
She hadn't received a call from Miriam in two days.
Previously, whenever Uriah couldn't handle Tegan, Miriam was the one sent in.
Even though Miriam disagreed with Uriah's actions regarding Leslie.
She always found ways to help him win Tegan back.
But this time...
"Are you always this tough with him?" Tegan asked.
Miriam scoffed. "After all the grief I've taken from him because of you and Leslie? Can't I run my mouth a little when I quit?"
Hearing Miriam say 'run my mouth,' Tegan couldn't help but laugh out loud.
This girl's sharp tongue wasn't something just anyone could handle!
When she got going, her words cut like a knife.
"I'm just worried he'll blacklist you in Portis City."
Tegan voiced her concern.
Uriah wasn't like Yorick Quarry in Portis City; he was a terrifying force to be reckoned with.
Quitting on such bad terms-given Uriah's temper, he would definitely put the word out.
By then, nobody would dare hire Miriam!
Unlike Tegan, Miriam didn't care about any of that. She looked at her friend and asked, "Did you forget?"
Tegan asked, "Forget what?"
"I have nothing to lose!" Miriam declared.
Tegan looked completely bewildered.
"Harper and I grew up in an orphanage," Miriam explained. "We don't have parents. She works for Jeremy Patel now, and she isn't afraid of that bastard's threats."
Jeremy Patel had a lot of flaws, but he had one redeeming quality: he was fiercely protective of his people!
Even though Harper was just his assistant.
She had been by his side for years, and Jeremy was a total rebel.
If Uriah dared to tell him not to employ Harper?
Knowing Jeremy's temper, he would absolutely blow up.
Simply put he wouldn't give a damn about Uriah! In fact he might even an throw some Some hurdles Uriah's way just .net>
Sent his irritation.
Hearing that Miriam grew up in an orphanage, a flash of shared empathy crossed Tegan's eyes.
She hadn't grown up in one herself, but to her, the Horner family was worse than an orphanage.
*Buzz, buzz.* Tegan's phone vibrated.
It was Finley.
She glanced at Miriam and answered, "Prof. Yoder."
"Are you off the clock?"
"Yeah, I'm heading to the cafeteria now."
"Pick something up for me, will you? I'm not coming down," Finley said.
"Oh, alright. Sure," Tegan replied.
"I don't want meat, and no eggplant."
No meat and no eggplant?
What did that leave?
"Then what do you want?"
"Just figure it out."
With that, Finley hung up. He was always so casual with her.
Anyone watching would think Tegan was his girlfriend.
Tegan said a quick goodbye to Miriam and headed to the cafeteria. Right after she left, Helena called Miriam.
Helena's voice came through the line. "Uriah said if you come back right now, he'll overlook your disrespect."
Miriam scoffed. "Do I look like I need him to overlook it?"
The nerve of that guy!
Acting like she was begging for her job back, offering to 'overlook' it.
Well, she wasn't going to overlook his behavior!
Helena pushed on. "Uriah also said if back and
you come
things out between Leslie and Tegan hell
help you deal with Gi
"Deal with Gideon? I don't need his
with
heat! Who does he think he
is? Tell um to mind his own
business!"
Helping her deal with Gideon?
He couldn't even manage Leslie and Tegan, and he wanted to help her?
What a joke!
Miriam wasn't going to coddle Helena. She hung up instantly.
