His emotional intelligence was practically non-existent.
As the door slammed shut with a sharp bang, Finley pursed his lips and walked straight over to Tegan.
Tegan had just zipped up her suitcase and stood up.
Finley handed her a small cake. "Eat something sweet. It helps when you're in a bad mood."
He was painfully direct. He had no idea how to comfort women, but he figured that eating something nice might make her feel better.
Tegan stared at the dessert he offered, briefly stunned, before a soft smile broke across her face.
She took the cake. "Thank you."
She didn't refuse. Back when she was stuck around Uriah, she had always bought her own treats. This was the first time anyone had ever gone out of their way to buy her something.
Uriah used to buy sweets occasionally, but they never made it to Tegan. Leslie always snatched them away. And Tegan, of course, was never going to complain to Uriah over a dessert. That silent endurance was exactly why Leslie had been so brazen and relentless.
But right now, tasting a gift bought specifically for her, Tegan's face lit up like a little
sun.
Seeing her genuine joy, Finley raised an eyebrow. "It's just a small cake. Is it really that exciting?"
"You don't get it," Tegan said softly. "This is the first time I've ever gotten to eat a cake someone bought just for me."
"Didn't Star ever buy you anything?"
Finley thought about Uriah for a second. With a psycho sister like Leslie hovering around, anything Uriah bought was bound to be stolen. He had never seen a sister exhibit such intense possessiveness over her brother. It would be bizarre enough if they were just adopted, but the fact that they were biological siblings made her obsession deeply disturbing.
"That's different," Tegan replied. "When Star bought treats, we shared them. This is the very first time someone got something exclusively for me, and I actually got to eat it."
"Where's Skye? Isn't she going to eat with us?"
"She ran off. I have no idea why."
Finley was completely clueless about his sister's baffling behavior, but Tegan's smile only grew wider at the mention of her.
Finley went to take a shower.
Tegan sliced the cake in half, walked over to Skye's door, and knocked.
"Just pretend I don't exist," Skye called out from inside.
"I'm coming in," Tegan announced.
"I'm not here."
Tegan opened the door anyway and found Skye lounging on the bed, playing a video game.
"I told you to pretend I don't exist! I'm not getting in your way," Skye whined playfully.
Tegan placed the cake on the desk. "Eat up."
Skye paused, staring at the dessert. She actually shared half with me?
Suddenly, Skye-understood exactly how Yvonne must have felt whenever she dealt with Star. Back in the day she used to be endlessly jealous of how sweet star was whenever she saved food for Yvonne.

And now.. if Tegan ended up marrying Finley, who wouldn't absolutely adore having her as family? Skye knew she could easily love a sister-in-law like her for the rest of her life.
"Did you eat?" Skye asked. She had caught a glimpse of the cake earlier, and it was definitely a single-serving size.
"I saved half for myself," Tegan replied.
"Oh. Well, thanks. I'll buy you one next time."
Tegan gave her a sweet smile and turned to leave.
Skye sat on her bed, stunned for a long moment. She silently swore to herself that if Finley somehow messed this up and test Tegan, she was going to end his life.
Unable to contain her excitement, Skye immediately grabbed her phone to call Yvonne. But in her haste to brag, she accidentally tapped Stella's contact instead.
Stella was currently hanging out with Ronald. She picked up, a bit surprised. "Skye?"
Did something happen to Tegan?
"Star? Oh, wait, I dialed the wrong number," Skye blurted out.
Before Stella could say another word, Skye hung up.
Stella stared at her phone, utterly confused. Ronald gently rubbed her head. "Skye
called you?"
"She said it was a mistake. She sounded weird, though. Probably looking for another fight with Yvonne?"
