Chapter 1005:

That was when the insinuation of his words finally hit Nola like a slap. He thought she was unwell. Not just confused—mentally unstable. Just minutes ago, she’d been glowing with pride. Now her face drained of color, mortified. This old man was seriously suggesting she needed psychiatric help? Director of Klathe Hospital or not, did he really think that entitled him to dismiss her, a protégé of the Healer?

Nola’s voice dropped, turning cold and sharp. “Dr. Sampson, please think before you speak and refrain from insulting me anymore. My mentor—the Healer herself—might not take kindly to such remarks.”

At the mention of the Healer, Davey’s gaze shifted. First to Nola. Then, slowly, to Elena, who sat still as ever, quiet but commanding. Nola claimed the Healer was her mentor? How could that be?

Davey jabbed a finger in Nola’s direction. “You claimed to be the Healer’s protégé?”

Nola let out a sharp, derisive laugh. “Finally regretting ever insulting me, huh? Yeah, the legendary Healer is my mentor.”

Nola smirked. It was almost comical that Davey had come chasing after legends, yet failed to see one staring him in the face. And this was the man running Klathe Hospital.

Davey’s expression tightened as he turned to Elena. “Is she really a protégé of the Healer?”

Davey doubted Nola’s claim, as she didn’t strike him as a medical talent. Why would the Healer take someone like her on?

Before Elena could get a word in, Nola cut in fast. “Why are you turning to her for answers? She can’t tell a fracture from a fever. What makes you think she knows anything about the Healer?”

Whatever doubts Davey had earlier were gone now. Elena, the real protégé of the Healer, sat right there, and Nola hadn’t recognized her. Worse, Nola had dismissed Elena as an outsider who didn’t know the basics of medicine. If even someone as talented as Elena was deemed clueless about medicine, then no one else in the world could claim to have any knowledge in the field.

Davey stared at Nola like she’d lost all sense.

Lamont stepped up, confidence written all over him. “Dr. Sampson, Dr. Vance is absolutely the protégé of the Healer—I can vouch for Dr. Vance. Just a few days ago, I came down with something serious, and it was Dr. Vance who convinced the Healer to operate on me. The Healer’s medical skills are unmatched. Despite the numerous offers of vast sums just for the chance of receiving treatment, the Healer has never been moved. Only Dr. Vance can invite the Healer over.”

On his way over, Davey had kept circling the same question: why had the protégé of the Healer turned up at the Base Medical Center and operated on Deputy Commander Aston? What kind of irresistible offer had the Azure Dragon Unit Base made? Whatever it was, Klathe Hospital would double it as long as Elena was willing to come on board.

But now, everything clicked into place. The people at the base had no idea that Elena was the protégé of the Healer, and the Healer herself had passed away ten years ago. Worse, they were rallying around an impostor. His earlier concerns had been pointless.

Davey kept his tone even as he said, “Isn’t it…”

Just as likely the Healer in question wasn’t brought in by anyone, but has been here the entire time?”

The room went still, the idea settling over them like a fog. The thought that the Healer might have already been among them caught everyone off guard.

Lamont shook his head right away. “No chance. If the Healer was stationed here, I’d know it.”

Glenn’s expression sharpened, his voice rising with suspicion. “Dr. Sampson, what exactly did you come here for? Just trying to stir up trouble? Trust me, if the Healer were on base, I’d already be rolling out the red carpet.”
