Chapter 1213:

Even though he refused to admit it, Elena was sharp enough to figure out the real reason. Wesley must have learned she was in Yoswye because news of Torin’s proposal had spread everywhere. He had heard about it while still on the Gaxora and left immediately, even though he was badly hurt. Was he really so afraid that she might accept Torin’s proposal?

Elena looked at Wesley with a flat expression that clearly told him he was being stupid. “Didn’t you know that I hate Torin’s guts?”

Now that she had called him out on his real reasons, Wesley rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly, feeling embarrassed and uncomfortable. He knew deep down she would never accept Torin’s proposal, but even the smallest possibility of losing her to someone else was more than he could handle. He brought her wrist to his lips and kissed it softly. “I missed you, you know.”

Elena made a little snorting sound, clearly unimpressed by his attempt to be sweet after acting like a jealous fool.

Trying to steer the conversation elsewhere, Wesley tilted his head with a half-smile. “So, did you come all the way to Yoswye just because you were worried sick about me?”

Elena’s tone was deliberately sharp, her eyes steady. “No. I came to see if you were actually dead.”

Wesley didn’t take it personally. He knew she didn’t mean it. “Come on, you think I’d die and leave you to sulk alone?” he said with a grin.

Her expression tightened. She still hadn’t stopped worrying about the poison coursing through him. “We need to head back to Klathe first thing tomorrow,” she said. “There’s an herb I need to flush the toxin out. I didn’t bring it with me.”

Wesley waved off her concern with a shrug. “No rush. Let me take care of one last thing here first, and then we’ll go.”

She frowned, clearly annoyed by how casually he treated something that could kill him. Her voice turned cold, sharp as a blade. “If you don’t purge the poison within a month, no miracle will be able to save you.”

He let out a low chuckle and met her gaze. “As long as I’ve got you around, I’m in good hands.” Before she could scold him, he raised a hand and added quickly, “Five days, tops. Then we head home. Deal?”

Elena knew exactly what was eating at him. He longed to uncover the truth about his mother’s death, no matter how ugly it might be. And if she were in his shoes, she would have done the exact same thing. She gave a short nod. “Alright.”

Wesley leaned in, pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead, and whispered, “This is the last time. I swear, I won’t make you worry about me again.”

Elena didn’t respond. She had chosen to care for Wesley, and with that came accepting everything about him. She straightened up and said, “If you’re staying, crash in my room. Let the—”

“Guards take care of everything else.” This wasn’t home, after all. And if Torin’s men caught wind of his presence, they would keep hunting him.

Wesley didn’t argue. “Alright. Whatever you say,” he replied.

Now that things were settled, he nudged her playfully, smirking like a devil.
