Chapter 1219:

A slight, knowing smile appeared on Elena’s lips. “Why should I be? You look just like any other old man. What sets you apart?”

Jerald frowned and snapped, “Do you really not understand respect?”

One eyebrow lifted, Elena said nothing and continued to look straight at him. Jerald quickly glanced away and settled into a large chair that made his authority clear. “You were brought here because I have an offer for you.”

Hearing the word “offer” caught Elena’s interest. She waited, curious about what would follow.

From his pocket, Jerald produced a check. “This check is for half a million. Take it and leave Yoswye at once. Stay far away from Torin.”

That was all Elena needed to realize exactly who this elderly man was. Everything pointed to AstraMed Pharmacy being part of the Duncan family’s vast business network, and this man was clearly one of the family’s senior members. Trying to buy her off with money, and only offering half a million? How ridiculous!

With a click of her tongue, Elena picked up the check. “Mr. Duncan, do you truly think Torin’s value stops at half a million? Your family’s wealth could rival the country’s treasury, yet you think I would settle for such a paltry sum? How insulting. Honestly, even a pet dog of mine costs more than half a million.”

She tore the check into shreds, letting the pieces flutter to the floor.

Shock registered on Jerald’s face. He had never expected such defiance. Within the expanse of Yoswye, even royalty would show him respect, and everyone else treated him with the utmost reverence. However, this young woman wasn’t intimidated in the slightest.

Jerald’s palm hit the table with a bang, and his voice rang out. “Who do you think you are? That check was an act of goodwill. Do you understand the consequences of turning it down? I could crush you like an ant. Make your choice. Either you leave Yoswye, or you won’t live to see another day.”

Refusing to back down, Elena answered, “Stop with the empty threats, Mr. Duncan. If you really meant to kill me, you wouldn’t be sitting here offering me a check.”

She had seen through it. Jerald had only called her here because he feared Torin and did not dare lay a hand on her. He planned to scare her into leaving on her own. Why? Because she had already brought down Gleyross Hospital, and the elders of the Duncan family disliked the idea of her becoming Torin’s girlfriend or even his wife.

Jerald hadn’t expected Elena to catch on to his motives so quickly. He indeed had no wish to cross Torin. But Elena had already ruined one of the Duncan family’s prized holdings and was on friendly terms with the royals. The idea of her marrying into the Duncan family was out of the question.

Jerald’s eyes narrowed, his words now edged with menace. “You thought I wouldn’t harm you? If you beg for mercy right now, I might spare your life.”

Elena gave a small, amused laugh. “I didn’t come here to beg you.” She had planned to buy some medical ingredients, but now it seemed she wouldn’t need to spend a single penny to get them. “You should know, I came here to handle you,” she added, keeping her voice light.
