Chapter 1252:

The sight made Lance leap from his seat, ready to rush in and break her fall.

A surprising turn happened just then. With perfect timing, Elena pushed off with her right leg, landed back in the saddle with poise, and pulled tightly on the reins, asserting control over Boreas.

In that instant, the unruly horse and his new rider surged forward, taking off with blazing speed.

Lance could only stare, frozen, watching Boreas run calmly and confidently with Elena in charge.

He could hardly believe what he was seeing. Boreas had really given in to her. A memory flashed back—he had spent an entire month earning Boreas’s trust, just so he could ride. Elena had managed it in less than three minutes.

Jealousy crept in, mixing with his relief. Earlier, he had worried Elena wouldn’t be able to handle Boreas. Now, seeing her succeed so quickly left him feeling inferior.

Celeste looked over her shoulder and spotted Elena finally starting the race. Her face twisted into a sneer. What was the point of Elena getting on the horse now? She had already made it halfway around the track, while Elena was still just getting started.

Celeste snapped her whip through the air. “Come on, darling, let’s leave that sly fox in the dust.”

With that command, her prized horse surged forward, picking up even more speed. Victory seemed certain in her mind.

Even though Elena was still half a lap behind, she didn’t show any signs of panic or urgency. She leaned closer to Boreas, gently stroking his neck, and whispered, “It’s your turn now. Let’s catch up to that horse ahead.”

Boreas seemed to understand her words. He snorted and then powered forward with a deep, thunderous charge.

A bright, joyful smile appeared on Elena’s face as she rode. She and Boreas moved together so smoothly, it was as if they shared the same heartbeat.

Two minutes later, the finish line appeared in Celeste’s sights. A triumphant grin spread across her lips. “We did it, darling! The race is ours!”

But the words had barely left her mouth when something streaked by, faster than lightning, crossing the finish line before her.

Shock widened Celeste’s eyes. This couldn’t be happening. She had been so far ahead. How had she ended up losing?

When Celeste finally reached the end, Elena and Boreas were already waiting, calm and composed.

Boreas flicked his tail and tossed a sideways glance at Celeste’s horse. That look left Celeste feeling strangely displeased, almost as if the horse were mocking her. Frustration tightened in her chest, making it hard to breathe. She had just been looked down on—by a horse!

Celeste’s gaze drifted to Elena, who was wearing a dazzling smile, which only made the sting of defeat sharper. Her equestrian skills had been outclassed by this country bumpkin…

Defeat hit Celeste hard, and a shadow of anger darkened her face.
