Chapter 1299:
“What are they doing here? Didn’t I make it clear they’re not welcome in this house?”
The butler quickly stepped in and explained, “You passed out by the gate earlier. Mrs. Spencer was the one who gave you emergency help and saved you.”
Even after hearing that, Gerald’s expression remained cold. Zoie had saved him? He found it difficult to believe. After everything she had done—interfering in Lawrence’s marriage, mistreating young Wesley, and constantly trying to come between him and Lawrence—he despised her. If she hadn’t been Karen and Theo’s mother, he would have kicked her out of Kathe long ago. Gerald hadn’t expected her to be the one to save him today.
He stayed quiet. Lawrence, watching his father lying there in bed, lowered his voice and spoke gently. “Dad, your health isn’t what it used to be. Please don’t be mad at us for entering the estate. We just wanted to visit. If you still don’t want to see us, we’ll leave. But… are you really going to stay angry at me forever? We haven’t spoken like father and son in years.”
Gerald had only two sons—Lawrence and Joseph. And although he had been bitter toward Lawrence for a long time, now that he was older, the anger didn’t burn as fiercely as before. There were still grudges, yes, but seeing Lawrence make the effort to patch things up and knowing that Zoie had saved him today, he finally decided to let it go and allowed them to stay.
Zoie, sensing her chance, felt a quiet satisfaction rise in her chest. She had known her plan would work. With a soft, concerned tone, she said, “Gerald, your health really gave us a scare today. I’m just glad I knew a bit of first aid. Now that you’re awake, it’s best to eat light meals for a few days. I know some good recipes that help with recovery. Let me make something for you.”
Gerald met her eyes and sat up slowly. He didn’t respond, but his silence wasn’t rejection. Zoie smiled and headed toward the kitchen. Now that she had her foot back in the door of Hillside Manor, it was only a matter of time before she found a way to deal with that annoying Wesley.
Gerald, on the other hand, was thinking about family. No matter how much trouble there had been in the past, Lawrence was still Wesley’s father. And with something as important as Wesley bringing his girlfriend back, Lawrence had the right to know what was going on.
Gerald said, “Wesley’s bringing his girlfriend over for dinner tonight. You should stay for the meal.”

At the mention of Wesley, Lawrence’s face turned cold.
Lawrence had always looked down on his son, Wesley. If it weren’t for his desire to regain control of the Spencer Group before Gerald passed away, he wouldn’t have cared one bit whether Wesley got married. In fact, he preferred that Wesley stay single, since it would only give him more reasons to pressure Wesley into stepping down from his role as head of the Spencer family. But in front of Gerald, Lawrence had no choice but to hide his true feelings. He gave a stiff nod and muttered, “Alright.”
Lawrence was simmering with bitterness. Gerald had always shown a soft spot for Wesley. Lawrence blamed that favoritism for getting him ousted from the family and losing his claim to the company.
